I am definitely not a specialist on this, but I guess most people would confirm that using a business visa is the better thing to do when you are planning to stay in Russia for a shorter time period.

garota-22,
Try and get a long stay business visa first. Obtaining temporary residence involves a mountain of paperwork and unless some major company is doing it all for you then you and BF will be expending time/energy/money.

Read up about temporary residence in the Visa section on the homepage.....

After a year you can just do the regular thing for an 'expat': take a 'visa run'. Go to one of Russia's Neighbours. to apply for a new visa (The Baltics for instance) or get yourself a new one in combination with a family visit to Argentina.
