Hi everybody,

I am thinking about a trip to Irkutsk and Baikal (Olkhon island) for about ten days in the end of July.
Will it be necessary to book train/bus-tickets (I will stay in Krasnojarsk before) and accomodation in advance? Or can I just start my journey and buy tickets and find an accomodation when I am there?
Would that be possible with only very basic knowledge of russian language? Confused

Greetings

Hardy

Hardy,
Well, well, well...three holes on the ground Smile I'll (actually my girlfriend and I ) are looking doing a three day tour in July and our starting point is Krasnoyarsk as well....
I buy my tickets two or three days in advance usually, but other times I just roll up and buy them on the day. For this time of year, being holiday time, it may pay to buy a couple of days before.
As for the tours, most of the companies are an "all inclusive deal". So you would be paying for accommodation in Irkutsk as part of the tour. The longer ones usually have a day or two seeing the sights of Irkutsk before getting stuck in to the Baikal part.
You could for instance, but the train ticket to go to Irkutsk and when you get there buy your return ticket. You could also ask one of the company guys to help you out when they pick you up......
Krasnoyarsk to Irkutsk is 20 hours, in a fast/firmenny (?) train so you may spend closer to 12-14 days on your tour depending on the connecting train schedules....

As for the operators of tours, the ones collected on the waytorussia Baikal guide are the ones my girlfriend has found anyway. So check 'em out as they have an english version on their sites.......
