I am interested in doing some shopping in this famed mrket, but disappointingly, I know that this market is only in its full swing at weekends. As I may not be able to make my stay in Moscow at weekend, could someone advise me the operations for weekday? It is still worth going on weekdays? Worth going means I could still be spoilt for choices of souvenirs.

What do you think?

The Izmolova souvenir market is closed except on weekends. Period.

The rynok outside of the gated souvenir area is open every day to the best of my knowledge. But vendors there just sell your average junk--clothing and cosmetics and shoes and stuff, no souvenirs.

On weekdays only the stalls at the front of the souvenir market are manned. That means plenty of matrioshki, fur hats, arts and crafts, soviet paraphernalia and a couple of t-shirt stalls. Sometimes the guys who sell the old propaganda posters show up as well. You miss out on all the old junk that they hawk on weekends, which apparently some people like, and the paintings. Otherwise the only difference is the number of stalls selling the same things (it all looks the same to me anyway) and the atmosphere.

We were there on june the 2nd 2006, a Friday. Yes a part was closed, but maybe because of some renovation activities and not because it is a working day.
We spend a substanial amount of money on souvenirs.

Happy shopping.
