Hello from Novosibirsk! I haven't been in the WTR forums since I came to Russia, because I'm paying per megabyte, and don't have much time on the internet. But I thought I should stop by and say that most everything I learned about Russia and Russians on WTR has proved to be true and helpful. Overall, the experience has been great and I've met a lot of really nice people here. It definitely helps to know some Russian, but being fluent isn't necessary. Enough people know a little english that they can help fill the gaps in my language skills. But when I'm out with Russian friends, I usually carry a dictionary with me - it's been helpful. It's my first Eastern European country to visit, and I think my experience travelling in India helped me adjust to things here. Having said that, I think that the people and culture here is definitely more European than Asian, even though we're technically in Asia. That's not really surprising since Siberia has been settled and developed by European Russians. When i get home and have more time to digest all of my experiences in Russia, I'll be back here to contribute more to the discussions about Russia and Russian people. In the meantime, do svidaniya!

no, in fact I've only seen Novosibirsk & Tomsk (and Moscow a half-day)

I've found service everywhere to be average to excellent, and people helpful & usually friendly. I'm getting a little tired of constantly breathing cigarette smoke, though! People smoke everywhere. They also drink beer everywhere - on the street, in the park, etc. and at all times of the day (and not just men either). But people are relaxed, easy-going, and love walking & being outdoors. I can also confirm that there are more beautiful young women here than in any other city I've been to (but when they turn 25 they must disappear somewhere - work, home?). As for all the negative things said about Russian men (drinking too much, fighting, etc.), I haven't met enough men here to say whether it's true, but I've asked local women/girls about it and they confirm that it's true, but that not all Russian men are bad. Personally, I think it's more myth than truth.
