Hi there

Can anyone tell me whether you can get roubles outside Russia or do you have to take US dollars or pounds and change it there? Also, how much should you take in for a weeks break?

Cheers

Dollars and Euros are easy to change, I don't know about Pounds. I take just a little bit of pocket money and gt my rubles from the ATM at the airport. Master/Eurocard and Visa are also widely accepted, so you really don't need too much cash.

Thanks for this but I am still interested in knowing whether you can get roubles outside Russia or are you not allowed to and have to get them in Russia itself. Good to know about the ATM's though.

Cheers

Only a FOOL would buy roubles outside of Russia - the exchange rates are naff. If you're coming from the UK then my advice would be to save up crisp twenty pound notes (cash machines NOT at the banks might be useful or a friend who works in a bank) and change them when you're here - this is quite easy if you are only visiting Moscow and or St. P's but can also be done legally here in Novosibirsk.

Depending on where you're visiting you might want to bring some euros as well as a back up but I'd forget dollars for the foreseeable future. Your budget for the week will of course depend on where you are going (big country you know), where you stay, what you eat etc - don't be fooled; Russia is no longer a budget destination for tourists.

Russian rubles are convertible in Finland, Turkey, China, Mongolia and most of former Soviet Republics.
