Hi, I live in Washington, D.C., so it's easy for me to get rubles for my trip next week to Russia. I was planning to bring some with me for convenience on the first day, but read somewhere on-line yesterday that it's illegal to bring rubles into the country - is this true? I realize I could slip in a few bills but don't want any trouble at customs.

I think it would be best to wait until you get there and then exchange some USD for Rubles...you can do it in the airport but I would only do about $20.00 because of the low exchange rate.
I was over there a couple weeks ago and the exchange rate in Moscow City was running about 29.90 ...in the airport it was about 21.50/
I usually send my fiance a couple $100.00 thru Western Union for her and the girls travel expenses to Mosow to meet me at the airport. Once we get to her sister's home in Moscow we go to a bank, located in most all the stores there, and exchange more money. so we can buy our train tickets back to their home.
Also, most of the time when I use the ATM there (usually is a $1.00 transfer fee) I'll get Rubles instead of USD.
I leave all my Rubles with them at the airport when it's time for me to leave.
Hope this helps....and beware of the taxi drivers there...they love USD

if its 5 stars, its a normal price then.

The men , and their Russian wives in a support group I belong to, told me this is what's called "Racking" ...I had several emails from people in the support group told me they paid only $120.00 a night for the same type room in the same hotel.
They said I paid the "list price" for the room.
I'm returning to Moscow in January to spend Orthodox Christamas with my fiance and the two little ones and on my last night there before I fly back to the States,,,,one of the guys in the support group has gotten us the same room for $120.00....
When I got home two weeks ago from my last visit, I bought all three of them new Nike's , the same shoe as over there, for less than what one pair cost in Moscow.
I also bought my fiance a new leather coat here for about $150.00....the same coat over there was $400.00....I bought the 8 year old twins Smile))....down jackets here for less than what one cost over there...the same coats and colors.
I could keep going on about the outrageous prices and this is why many Americans are going elsewhere abroad on vacations...
Russia could be one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world if they would back off from those outrageous prices and put out the welcome sign...
I think Russia is an awsome country, and the people I've been in contact with over there are just as awsome Smile

well, if you go somewhere else except Moscow, you'll see that Russia is not that expensive as it seems in Moscow.

i've just looked at prices of that novotel (http://www.novotel.ru/numbers/)
standard double costs $314,
you can also stay and pay only for 6 hours which is $130.
Maybe thats what your friends got? only 6 hours stay so it was cheaper?

Not 6 hours... a full day....and it doesn't matter how many stars the hotel has, it was definitely not a $ 325.00 a night five star room . I've traveled to a lot of countries and that was the worst room for the money I've ever paid for.
I don't know if you're an American or Russian living in Moscow, according to your name....but since I made the post to other list about my trip, a lot of people have told me the same thing, even a couple of Russians...I got RACKED by the hotel...
I've also decided not to take, my family over there, to that hotel again....thanks to the good friends I have, they've put me in touch with another hotel there, and I've made reservations with them this morning, that has more to offer in a room and a hotel in general, for the same price. Sometimes, the old saying goes...maybe it's who you kow and who your friends are....

This would certainly be helpful for any first-time visitors to the SVO airport!

Q: Would a person who cannot speak or read the Russian language have difficulties?

I purchased roubles from the Royal Bank of Canada in Calgary with no problem at all, I never filled in customs declarations entering or departing the country and still have some roubles left for my next visit.
Buying them before departures cuts down on the ammount of commission you pay and saves time at the airport.
