I recently finished watching Night Watch last evening for the very first time. It's the first film of the trilogy. It was finally released here very recently (finally, after all of this time Rolling Eyes ), and it's been on the video store shelves for around a month or so. It's been two years since the film was released in Russia in 2004.

Has anyone seen the second film, Day Watch? Some critiques from any you out there? I'll be seeing this one next. Cool

I've seen it... didn't find it very interesting, frankly, though film-craft was great and quite enjoyable if you don't want a serious movie. I liked the character Alisa who takes a bit more of a center stage in the second film.

Hi Oleg,
I wasn’t too bad. So, yeah . . . I thought it was entertaining. Although sometimes I get tired of subject matter dealing with vampires - because there is so much out there already. But the film did have some cool ideas and the story was kind of interesting. The acting was pretty good. I thought Anton was kind was kind of funny while he bumbled through the Metro drunk on pig’s blood Laughing . The quick cuts in the editing gave the film a fast-paced feeling, and there was a good variety of music (background ambiance and soundtrack). Special FX were great, but some of the graphics could improve the 3D texturing a little.

I watched it in the original Russian language, but needed to rely on English subtitles most of the time – which are displayed by default. Sometimes the subtitles were shown really creatively, so this makes it extra fun. The flipside (side 2) of the DVD has the dialogue dubbed in English. I didn’t prefer this version at all . . . cannot stand dubbed flicks. It’s best to see something in the original language, and then just use the subtitles of your choice (if needed). Oh well, that’s my general critique. Wink

I have seen Day Watch and I really enjoyed it, but of course I really liked Night Watch also. I agree with Mediashark that it was not a very serious movie, but the visual effects were very good and it gave the more needed character development that the first film seemed to be lacking. If you liked Night Watch then you will most likely enjoy Day Watch also.

I like both movies, but I enjoyed watching Daywatch more. Of course, as it has been said before it's not a serious movie but still quite entertainning. I found the humour better in Daywatch. Some parts were just hilarious...

Anyone knows what is happening with the third serie? After seeing the end of Daywatch I can't really imagine what the 3rd part could be like.. :<

I understand the third movie is going to be completely different, filmed in English language with all new characters/actors, and taking place in USA instead of Russia.

Really? That sucks. That's surprising, and disappointing - if this is really the plan. It sounds like a total sell-out which doesn't make any sense, either. I'll miss the original characters, if this is going to be the case.

Here's the real question: Is the third installment of this trilogy truly based on the originally written third chapter? Does the third story really take place in an english speaking country (USA/UK)? Or is this future production just a load of Hollywood influenced Bullshit?

I need to know more . . .

Nightwatch was the flagship of the Hollywood era of Russian film (why else do you think Hollywood called that the "Russian film miricale"?!); it had never been loyal to the original storyline (of the book), so they might as well go all the way! Twisted Evil

Seems to be the third option Sad

iF: Was NIGHT WATCH always intended to be three movies, or did that happen after you did the first movie?

TIMUR BEKMAMBETOV: I was originally looking at it as three movies. What we have now, the three movies become two Russian movies where we finish the story with DAY WATCH and the story about Anton Gorodestsky in Russia. Now, in the United States, we will produce a sequel. It will be about what’s happened at the same time in the U.S. as what was happening in Russia and how this story in Russia affects the reality here.

iF: Will there be characters from the other movies in American version?

BEKMAMBETOV: I hope so. I can’t tell you for sure. It’s not just my decision. It’s the producers. It’s a process, but I would like to have some of the Russian characters back, to keep them in this story.

iF: So, everything we saw in NIGHT WATCH, that’s all wrapped up in DAY WATCH?

BEKMAMBETOV: Yes.

Thanks, Mediashark and Dawnelle.

Dawnelle, great link . . . very fascinating input from the director of these films. I read the entire article at the site. Timur Bekmambetov has a very similar perspective toward filmmaking like I do - as an aspiring filmmaker myself. I felt quite overwhelmed by this after reading the interview.

I viewed Night Watch in Russia and thought is was great. I viewed Day Watch in Russian and thought it was even greater. Both have novel twists in their plots with interesting premises. And of course their graphic FX intepretations are fresh. Perhaps the vampire facet is old but hey, isn't this a film from the old country?
