Dear All
I would dearly like to travel by car to Russia again this year. However, I'm now a director of the company where I work and cannot be away for more than about 16 days. Travelling time from the UK eats about 7 days from my schedule and all "international" car hire companies want several arms and legs ie are very very expensive.
Ideally, I'd like to hire a reliable car for 2.5 weeks pickup and dropoff at domodedovo. Does anyone have any experience of this sort of thing - pitfalls, problems - my main worry is costs including mileage extras as I plan to travel a bit - readers of my previous posts will know.
All help gratefully received. Flying costs about £330 door to door whereas bringing a car takes 7 days (there and back) and costs about £1,000 leaving about £670 for car hire ie RBL 35,000 .

There's no such thing as free lunch. If the major car companies like EuorpeCar or Hertz cost a lot, there's a reason for it (insurance cost, bad roads in russia, etc.) |

My enquiries so far indicate several things:-
1 Most of the hire cars are "almost new" cars and virtually all benzine
Apparently modern diesels don't like the low quality of russian diesel.
2 The "almost new" bit accounts for the prices in a way but...
The costs should be lower than the UK for many reasons.
3 My russian contacts are ascertaining the daily rates for local hire of Korean Daewoo saloons. My guess so far is about USD60 per day x 14 = £450 but this will be confirmed in a couple of weeks once enquiries have been completed.
4 The you get what you pay for bit Mr Spice I don't agree with. The international companies simply charge more because they insist on doing everything to the n'th degree, have horrendous overheads, and foreigners are dumb enough to believe they're getting good value.
I shall be posting my experience this summer with hired cars (if indeed I don't take my own car). |

| I had a bad experience renting from Hertz in Rome. I'd rather try a local Russian-owned company. $60 per day is definitely more than WTR's estimate. That's the price I paid in Rome for a "new" car (albeit a shitty Euro Ford). |

A compact saloon will set me back about EUR30 per day for 15 days or about 20GBP/day = about £300 for 2 weeks (some sort of Daewoo compact saloon 1.6l manual petrol - something called an "elantra" i think. There are loads of conditions attached and I am still wading through all the insurance blurb and conditions. That said, this is just off of the website I was recommended and we all know the small print is small because...If I do decide to hire I'll post results on this site.
Note to Dimitri - I'm going to try for a discount and give them your details to get a link on your website. Will let you know how this goes!
I think some sort of deal based on referrals from WTR or some sort of booking portal along the lines your accomodation service would be good. You handle the 'english' foreign langauge side, they deal with the cars!
Regards

And for what it is necessary car? What purpose of travel to Russia? If for trips across Moscow it is easier to use a taxi. And if want to see the wild nature rent car will not approach for these purposes. Itself I like to travel on car and it is ready to discuss joint projects. Car LR Defender-110.

Dear Sergei
I know all about the moscow "taxi" system.
I use my car for travelling about outside Moscow.
Dacha, Golden Ring, StP, Ryazhan...and more.
I would say read my other posts but I understand that English is not your Language.
I do have a Russian Driving License.
Thanks for the offer of "joint projects".
This year my time in Russia is limited, so no time to arrange such things, sorry.
