Greetings!

I'm a student at Oxford studying German and Russian and in October am going to Yaroslavl' for 8 months to study the language at an institute there.

I've been informed that I need to apply for a "business" visa for 3 months initially and then re-apply, once in the country, for another visa to cover the rest of my stay in the country.

For this initial 3-month business visa, I'm however unclear as to whether an HIV test is needed and also, how recent the test must be. I already have a test done (negative, natch) from July this year - will that be recent enough for the VISA that starts in October? (3 months is a date I've heard but some people seem to think the HIV test must be done no earlier than 6 weeks before departure).

Thanks for anyone who can help me with this - I searched the forum and read every post relating to an hiv-test but I didn't get any real answers relating specifically to how recent the test may have to be. Sorry if I missed them.

Thanks very much again,

Peter

Hi, I can't help you with how recent the HIV test may have to be but I do believe you may not need one - I also have to apply for this sort of visa beginning in October, and the school I am going to told me I don't have to have the test done for the 3 month visa (and there is nothing about a test for 3 months on the London embassy website). I have been told I'll need a test to get my visa extended, but that this can be done in Russia - maybe this will be the same for you? Hope this helps!

Just an update on this - I applied for my 3-month visa by post last Friday (11th August) with no HIV test, and received my visa today (17th August), less than a week, and no problems at all.

hi ya,
i applied for 3 months single entry visa and had my HIV cert with me but it turned out to be not needed.
APART FROM IT! 2 points:
1. The London Consulate demonized queues 'publicity' is a bit OTT. 1 h head arrival is enough. No need for stamping your feet for 4 hours before the opening hour ( 8.30 )
2. Even though the address of the consulate provided on rusemblon.org is 5 Kensington Palace Gardens, W8, the visa office is based at 5 Palace court W2 - REMEMBER IT WHOEVER APPLIES FOR VISA

cheers

Yes, but if you tried queueing at end of May, June or beginning of July then you'd not get in.
Doors opened at 0900 last time I was there in June 2006 . By august, everybody already have recevied their visas and have gone on holiday - hence no queues in August. Queueing is only an issue in the busy season.
I have no doubt 1 hour wait is enough outside the busy season, but you are wrong to state that the publicity is OTT. I speak from 10 years of experience of queueing up there in May/early June. By 0900 there can be 30+ people queueing past the bus stop and since there are only one or two operational windows open from 0900 - 1200 (IIRC) and each person takes 10 mins (to submit and pay) remember some personal queuers have multiple passports on them then - max 36 people can be seen in that time - my rough estimate. I have often stood in the queue next to people queueing for the second time cos they did not arrive early enough. In the busy season the queue starts between 0500 and 0530 . Sorry to rant on a bit but I think your assessment could be a little misleading.

Just a line to say that I didn't need a HIV test to extend my visa once I was out here.
