Hello. I am new to this forum.
I have yet to visit Russia, and would like to ask: If it were feasible for you to live anywhere in Russia, where would you choose to live?
Any advice you could provide would be much appreciated.
Thanks. |

| You should go to there and visit...then decide. Winters are harsh! |

The most comfortable cities and towns in Russia are the biggiest.
13 russian cities with population of 1.000.000+ peoples.
Then almost all towns of Moscow region and Western Sineria are rather comfortable for business and job, towns of Krasnodar region (Sochi) are good for having a rest, and vacations.
IMHO most of russians are going to live in Moscow and St.Peterburg. In the fact these megapoles are the best places in Russia.
As for me I like small towns of Moscow region - Noginsk, Sergiev Posad, Khimki, Kolomna... |

Thanks for the reply.
I was also under the impression that the largest cities in Russia were generally the best. I had read that the richest people all lived in Moscow.
It seemed that people would rather live in the large cities.
Interesting... that's the opposite of some other countries I've been in (Brazil, for example) where (generally) the only reason people move to the big cities is to find work, and people with money seem to prefer smaller, more secluded areas.
Regarding the areas you named in the Moscow region: Are these places expensive?
Again, thanks for the info. |

It depends on what do you want to have.
Food, clothes are in the same price like in Moscow and St.Peterburg.
You can manage to live im Moscow with min. sum of money equiv 150$/month. If you live not in your own flat you'll spent 300-700$ extra per month.
Appartments - buying or renting would cost for you cheaper than in Moscow. As town closer to Moscow than price or appartments would be higher.
Now you can buy new 2 bedroom appartment for 200.000$ in Moscow. appts in Khimki are little cheaper - 160-170.000$, Noginsk - 80-100.000$. |

| From what I've seen I would definitely prefer St. Petersburg over Moscow. Not only the city, but also the people in general seem more elegant. More friendly too. |

|
|
Quick note: there are, in fact, some parts of Russia where winters are mild. As I mentioned in another post, the city (and not just the territory) of Krasnodar is actually fairly warm in the winters. I was looking for the website that was run by the city transport department; they used to have lots of photos of their trams, and one of the striking things (to me) was that, except for the winter photos from the past two or three years, there was *no snow* and everyone was wearing light jackets.
That said, the Winter from Hades just passed did hit K-dar. K-dar didn't get the -40 C that Moscow did, but it did get -20 C.
If you're from Minn. or some such, or just want bitter cold, have at it with the more northern spots (for example, it's already autumn in Moscow/St. Pete). If warmth is more to your liking, the Southwest is the place to be.
Poka! |

| Besides the obvious choices of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, I like Novgorod, my sister likes Rostov. But I say it from the point of view of a tourist, whilst my sister says it from the point of view of a person that lived in Russia. |

Dear friends,
I'm Russian, born in Russia and have been living in Russia for all my life.
And I should not say every Russian dreams to live in Moscow.
This can be said only by a person that doesn't know Russia at all (or a Moscower)
I lived in big cities (Krasnoyarsk, Moscow, Kharkov, Kiev) and now I live in a small Russian city of Belgorod (the population is about 400 thousand people). It's a quiet old Russian city, very beautiful and green.
The life here isn't so expensive as in Moscow.
I saw somebody here wrote that you can live in Moscow for only $150 a month
Hey, guy, it seems you have missed one (or more) "0"
It's quite impossible even here in Belgorod.
Here (in Belgorod) every month you have to pay for a 3-rooms apartment $95 (with telephone and electricity).
But maybe it would be possible only if you are a yogi
And also now the life in big Russian cities is very dangerous and people from Belgorod (it's located 800 kilometers far from Moscow) even prefer not to go there alone
And also I must say the main part of people in Russia (not in Moscow, it cannot be called Russia at all) don't like Moscow at all.
You see it's a kind of a city-octopus sucking everything from all other parts of Russia.
And if you are going to visit Russia I can advise you to visit St.Petersburg of course, to see the Golden Entrance of Russia. And if you want to see the real Russia, it would be better to see some other places, like our Belgorod or Voronezh or others |

I too enjoyed Saint Petersburg more than Moscow!
There seemed to be a lighter feeling in the air!
Cuirassier, I have recently made friends from Voronezh, and I hope to do exactly as you suggest and visit this part of Russia on my next visit.
Oh, and I liked the link you posted in another thread about Belgorod! Looks absolutely amazing! Thanks! |

Hi
I'm planning my trip right now and will go to Krasnodar. I only can get very limited information of this city from Internet.
Anyone can tell me more?
