Saying that everyone is great does not look objective. Russia has one of the highest murder and robbery rates among more or less civilized countries. Russia has one of the most corrupt economies and systems of government. Accordig to many polls, people in Russia are some of the least tolerant towards other religions and ethnic groups. Someone has to be blamed for all this. I would say that there are many great and smart people in Russia, just like everywhere. But the number of rude, uncivilized and those with xenophobic views is also appaling. |

| A bit of a long story but please bare with me. One of my most memorable times in Russia (ok, it was the Ukraine) was when we went to hire a taxi to take us to a lake for an evening stroll. We started talking to the driver (yes, I know a little Russian), and the next thing you know, the trip to the lake was cancelled. We went to the store, I bought some wine and chicken, and we then went to his house to get his wife, his vodka, and some nice wood (cedar?) for grilling the chicken. We then went to a small river near his house -- the water was clean and the bottom was sand -- and had a cookout and small party. When the vodka and wine ran out, he went to a neighbor to get a bottle of moonshine (samogon). None of us had our bathing suits, so we ended up swimming in underwear. It took some trust for us to just go with the driver, but I tell you, it was a great time for all. I won't say that all Russians are great people but nearly all that I have met (been there several times) have been friendly and personable. Maybe it is the same everywhere -- get outside of the big cities and you can meet real people. |

|
|
(that was Southern for "What We Think" -- I'm fluent in Southern Drawl )
Around here at least, Americans:
1) Think Russia is cold. Always. You have no summer, and even Sochi is snowed in most of the year (now that I know someone from Krasnodar -- where today's high was higher than in North Carolina, and it was warmer some days in November than it was here, I no longer think this). To many people, Russia = Siberia, and Siberia = winter year-round.
2) Do NOT think that there are bears in the streets. I can't tell you how many Russians wanted me to tell my fellow Americans that there aren't bears in the streets. I made a promise to tell this to my friends, and I have. However, no one thought this before, so they all look at me like I'm ... um ... not that bright ...
3) Think Russia is completely economically depressed. Most opinions were formed during the Cold War (no cars, long bread lines, huge bureaucracy) or during the 1990's (massive economic depression). Today's growing economy doesn't even register. Sure, the economy is not great, but it's not like the 1990s.
4) Think Putin is a not very nice guy. In our news reports, he comes across as a new Soviet leader. But that is mainly because ...
5) Don't think about Russia. At all.
That last point is, I think, the most important. When Americans think about foreign countries, we think about China, or Iran, or Iraq, or Saudi Arabia, or Israel, or Western European countries, or India, or Pakistan, or Afghanistan, or Japan. Maybe Canada, Australia, North Korea. Sometimes Vietnam or South Africa, the Sudan, Somalia. Syria.
But Russia ... most people just don't think about Russia. At all. I'm an outlier, because I've started reading everything I can about Russia (yes, Masha has a lot to do with that). But most people spend days -- weeks -- months, even, without a single thought about Russia. They may have thought of it during the G8 summit ("Oh, our president is being stupid again. Hm. What's going on in hockey?"), and maybe again for the 15th anniversary of the defeat of the coup ("Oh, yeah -- the Soviet Union is gone. What's the latest from Iraq?"), and the jetliner crashes ("Those poor people ... shame, that."), and there was a recent blurb about Beslan ("Pity the children ... and how did Greece beat our basketball team?"). Most of the time, though? My fellow Americans couldn't even tell you that the word "troika" came to us from Russian.
And that's really what Americans think of Russians. Sorry; they just don't.
Poka ... |

Exactly! And if it was the same as here then why would we be interested. Let's keep the world interesting! |

Re: Russia is Russia, and Russians are Russians:
Sure. Absolutely.
Which doesn't answer the question about "what Americans think about Russians."
At all. In any way, shape or form.
So ... I was trying to answer the question about what Americans think of Russians, not trying to say anything about the realities of Russia, or of Russians.
My major point is that we don't really think about Russia or Russians. Would you disagree, or do you have a different answer to the question? |
