I would have dropped this in the Non-Relevant folder, since it doesn't pertain specifically to Russia - but they are such close neighbors.
Does anyone have any first-hand travel experiences in Belarus they want to share? I've been thinking about going there before the end of the year sometime, mostly spending time visiting Minsk and the surrounding countryside. Comments or concerns? |

| Well.. DON'T place a question like this in the Not Relevant section. No one will read it amongst the crap there.. |

Yes. That's the main reason I avoided starting this topic in that
folder . . . because very few viewers would ever read it.
So, who's traveled to Belarus . . . anyone? |

I almost travelled through Belarus, does that count?
But after some investigation, I didn't/couldn't afford it. Transit visas for Americans are approximately 10 times more expensive than for anyone else.
$180 each way! As opposed to 27 Euro for everybody else in the world.
Shall I say that Belarus doesn't welcome Americans? |

I had a similar story. Last year I actually bought a one-way train ticket from Prague to Moscow, but had this impression the transit visa could be purchased at the Polish/Belarusian border. But sure enough, after some research, the transit visa has to be applied in advance. There wasn't enough time to pay the Belarus Embassy a little visit, but I was lucky enough to refund the ticket (but after fee$) while still in Prague and just found other means. |

I ve been in Belarus 3 times for business in 1998 and 1999, in Minsk more exactly.
Well, Minsk is a typical city quickly rebuilt after the war : ugly...
I didn't like the atmosphere of this country, I felt fear in people everywhere, I guess it was the same kind of atmosphere during the soviet times... a tough dictature.
Another important thing, I got sick there : the worst flue I ever got and it was very difficult to find a doctor, I mean a real one who didn't prescribe aspirin to treat a 40C fever.
I don't know if some changes occured in the last decade but I guess it is more or less the same situation, at least "the President" is still the same.
In my opinion, don't waste your money and your time visiting Belarus, it doesn't worth it, except if you have some special good reasons
One positive point : I really liked the local cuisine. |
