I want to see some theater or shows while I'm in St Petersburg. Does anyone have suggestions? Are tickets hard to get on a short notice? I will problble need several tickets. Unfortunately, I do not speak Russian, so this would need to be considered in what I would understand.

You should be able to get tickets the same day, even if they are in Russian-still very nice to see and experience.

Possibility of getting tickets shortly depends on a theatre and, of course, on a show.
About language barrier ... I think if you say "Two (three. four etc.) tickets to ... bla-bla-bla ..." everybody will understand you Smile

I had an amusing experience in SPb @ Marinski (sp?) Theatre my first visit.
I was traveling in Russia on a one year, work visa.
My friend bought me a "regular" ticket, which I discovered was for Russians, not for foreigners.
We checked our coats and were going to our seats when babushka confronted us about my ticket. Now of course I understood nothing about what was being said; All I knew was my friend kept getting angrier. I thought she was gonna duke it out with this little old lady who was shouting at her and wagging the finger in my face.
Of course I found it all to be amusing, which baba didn't seem to appreciate one bit.
In the end, we were allowed to enter without me paying a ridiculous (extra) amount (something around $100 I was told), all because of my visa.
Hope your visit to the theatre is memorable too! Wink

www.balletandopera.com

This site lists all performances (opera, ballet, folk dance, etc) for all of the theaters in St. Pete. And it's in English!
