Privet! I recently sent a small package from the UK to a Russian friend. The value of the contents were about £15 ($30) The customs note on the front of the envelope was simply marked as "gift".

Would the recipient be expected to pay taxes when it's received, or is this only for larger, most expensive items?

I have sent numerous packages and i would say no. My experience is that it is only on packages that are over $100.00. So far I have sent several packages and I have had problems with only one.

Thanks for the information surfguy. And what is your experience with sending mail to Russia? Have they all been received, and how long does it usually take?

I sent through regular mail, to Samara.

I have send many packages, many times to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. I have nevr had a problem. I always send from US via US Post Office Express Mail. Usually takes 5 days. I think it is a bit more expensive to do it this way, but that said, I have never had a problem. I am not absolutely certain about the taxation question, however, it is my understanding that anything less than $200 is not taxed?

I've sent some personal effects via post to my own address in Moscow, and also marked it as 'gift'. Wasn't asked to pay any tax or anything.

I have been sending mail thru our Australian post since Xmas 2005 into Russia with no problems. Just make sure the value doesn't exceed $100usd and I have found that if you insure the package there is no interference. So far I haven't lost anything this way. Timeframe from Australia approx. 14 days small parcel to 21 days for small box.
