If you were going to work freelance in Russia, the very last thing you would want to do is get a Russian work permit. And if you do go ahead and do such a stupid thing....well, you get what you deserve.

Although I don't have a Russian work permit I know plenty of people who do. I can give you a rough outline:

You must have a letter of documentation of employment from your employer. This allows you to work ONLY for that business. If you change jobs you need yet another new permit from the new employer.

You must be disease tested as prescribed by the Russian Duma. The testing must be done in Russia a few specified clinics. Tests include leprosy, HIV and a host of other STD's.

Now all this crap has to be submitted to the proper Russian bureauracy and duly registered and recorded and your work permit is issued valid for a year.

So not only are your registration and visa constantly expiring, you are hogtied into a company specific work permit that expires and needs to be renewed all the time as well.

That's the beauty of freelance my little begonia, no need to take on yet another Russian bureaucratic nightmare. Why would you even consider such a thing?

P.S. Oh yeah, and you'll probably be liable to pay Russian taxes as well.
No work permit=a great thing.

yeah... i agree with you! the best bet is to take a 1 year business visa and either invoice services abroad or get cash in russia.

there are very few advantages you got as a resident but the hassle is such a huge... except if you're from few benefitted countries [belarus and to some extent other ex-soviet republic or countries that were ex-yugoslavia]... then it's fairly easy to get even permanent residence. permanent is a nice thing to have. it allows you to be a freelancer.

I am here in Moscow now, on a 12-month business visa. I hoped for full-time work and maybe a work permit, I just didn’t know how things operate out here. But all the companies I have visited have offered me work on a self-employed basis.

Thanks for the info
