I visited Russia last year on business visa from Intelservice to meet someone, but as I was in Rostov where they don't have an office, at last I was forced to stay in a hotel because of easier registration.

I'm planning to visit Rostov again soon, but I would not like to stay in a hotel this time.
My host there is suggesting the following plan:
1. She'll send me an invitation for private stay visa
2. She'll rent an apartment for me (she'll do it in her name, so I won't have to deal with "landlord letters", notars and all that. After all, I dont know if I can legaly rent an apartment with having a private-visa anyway)
3. I will register at OVIR with her adress (like Im staying there, officially), but I will actually stay at the rented apartment.

She says that basically the plan is OK (I mean the police will certainly not come to her door to check whether I'm really there Laughing ) but still...Im bit worried.

there's also one more thing that she heard somewhere (we dunno if its true): the authorities may reject her application for my invitation, if her appartment is not big enough to host guest (according to some regulations , like minimum space or something, I dont know really if its true)

Do you think this whole plan is OK? It worries me.

thanks!

It's sounds OK to me as well. Leave AT LEAST three months for obtaining a private visa.

Good Luck

Hi
Im just back from Russia (had a one month tourist visa) where I stayed with a friend in the town of Oryol for the first week. My friend decided that it would be better to register the visa in case I might get into trouble for non-registration during the rest of the trip (tran-siberian)

So after my friend making alot of telephone calls we eventually went to what i think was the local housing authority with certain deeds to the house, filled out 3-4 forms, waited an hour, met an official who did not look at the forms but stamped them and paid a fee* After this my visa was registered for the week.
(* the fee was 4 roubles but of course couldn't be paid over the table - instead I had to find a bank, fill out a lodgement form and wait 3 hours with half the babushkas in the town before lodging the 8 cent!!!)

This was above board with a normal tourist visa which was checked during the rest of my journey. I think your friend knows what she is doing and it should be grand.

Incidentially I stayed in private accommodation with a friend in moscow for the next week without registering the visa and the offiicials and immigration didint seem to care about this gap...

All the best,
Eoghan
