Nice signature. Unfortunately for you, it is the West that will soon be cleaned of the Western Europeans by your beloved muslims. Good luck dreaming and talking big. |

| While I was there we (meaning myself and my very dark Italian father) met two young boys who confessed to us that they were a punk and skinhead. The punk wearing jeans and a shirt and a skinhead with full, thick locks. Like others said, young men from poor families who take a cause to go with for a year or so. I did so last year with the punk scene, everything I owned had a safety pin in, this year they all went into the trash. Just a scene, a group, and a cause to put effort in. I truly felt like I was never "going to sell-out" and one day "rise over consumerism", until I realized everything about my scene was selling out and buying new mary janes to go with all the other girls in group. |

| I have a trip planned to Novosibirsk at the later part of Spring. I have a friend there, a very close friend of near 2 years. We talk by telephone weekly for over a year and she tells me to avoid Moscow completely by flying in thru Hamburgh Germany because it is unsafe for americans in Moscow. Is this the case? Am i safe to come at all? I love this family and want to visit. I have come to love the Russian people from knowing her. I study Russian language and (Damn the verb section) love it. Quite challenging. The key question is whether or not i would be safe in any part of Russia? Do Russians care what kind of person "I" am, or do they just see George Bush everytime a white boy comes to town? This is a sincere attempt to get informed. Thank you. :?: |

You might as well read all the existing questions on racism, skinheads etc etc. There's nothing new in yours. And then, you might even consider ignoring these other topics:
How many Americans, Europeans and other foreign nationals do you think already go to Moscow, as tourists, to live and work there.. Some of them post on this forum: did you read much on the daily assaults on their person in Russia? I don't recall...
If you have no need to be in Moscow, you might consider flying over Hamburg, or maybe another European city (don't know all connections) just to avoid potential troubles with switching flights. It might save money as well. Moscow is expensive. That would be a legitimate reason for me to do so...
If you want to visit Moscow, please go. Most accidents still happen at home. You will be at a safe distance from yours |

oh i do recall - the expat community in moscow alone is a little more than 10,000 and that is americans alone. i would imagine that there are way more brits than americans. so thats a start. plus lets throw a few kiwis in aussies in the mix, that a nice litte number. |

Beachbum, if you really have a friend who told you that, then I'm sorry to say that he/she is an idiot. To start with, fully 99.9% of people who either say nothing but bad about Russia or think it's so incredibly dangerous are people who've never been there. Beyond that, because some people can't handle that no, not every Russian is concerned about them having a good time and may not be "polite," they decide it's a dangerous place and warn everyone off of visiting.
Russia is not easy to visit. It requires visas for almost every non-former-Soviet country in the world (if not every). It can be frustrating, daunting and overwhelming. But these are never reasons not to visit if one actually wants to visit. |

snoof777: I referred to the very small amount of posts with first-person experience in being attacked.
Thanks for giving the figures. They help. People tend to forget that Moscow metropolitan area has grown to nearly 15 million inhabitants. More than in some of the smaller European countries. Take that into account whenever you hear something on any metropolis.
http://www.waytorussia.net/TalkLounge/viewtopic.php?t=4462 by gonethesun already mentions this, in a sensible advice for travellers scared of skinheads, mafia, bears.. |

I've started a poll... lets see how many travellers were actually lucky enough to meet a skinhead.
We'll do another poll regarding hooligans and street bullies in general. |

Yes there are skinheads. They can be menacing as they stand in the middle of parks giving anti-foreigner speeches with loudspeakers. I am Italian and nobody ever messed with me but they stab black and asian children sometimes and people from India, Africa, Asia and the Caucasus feel uncomfortable there.
Russians are rude and stare at foreigners because they're not accustomed to seeing many of them. Honestly it's the least pleasant place I've ever been and unless you've got some morbid curiosity spend 3 days in St Petersburg and the rest of your time in Europe. |
