Very good to have this thread on track with nice replies.

For perspective, this is what a modern city looks like - after recovering from many years of communist rule (How long does it take to rebuild a big country? As long as you want if you aren't building!)

The city above is Shanghai. Let's just think, is there any place like this in Russia? No. Does any part of Moscow look anywhere like it? No.

Why is it more expensive to live in the sub-modern-city of Moscow than in a modern city like Seoul or Shanghai?

That is the key question to be asking. And this is what everyone should be asking every rude Moscow shopkeeper as well.

I know many of us have sentimental, historic, romantic, and business reasons to be in Russia. Others may just live there, and have no choice.

However, those that can, and do, leverage their location, can scratch their heads and wonder.

What went wrong in this place and why do these nice people put up with it?
