I will be leaving on the transmongolian railway on sept 6th, but i still need to arrange my ticket OUT of russia (st.petersburg) before I can actually enter the country. ANYONE have any recommendations on an inexpensive and easy way to buy my onward travel out of russia, leaving from st.petersburg? very flexible, in fact I may not even use it, but I know I need something to show them when i enter the country. THANKS!

There is a daily bus (for about $50 US dollars) from St Pete to Helsinki, operated by East Gate Express (you may be able to buy a ticket in advance through the www.monkeyshrine.com agency in China).

There are also 2 trains to Helsinki from St Pete (Train #36 or #34) for 120 EURO (again tickets thru www.moneyshrine.com).

Or you could buy a fully REFUNDABLE ticket on Finnair to Helsinki (about $300 one way), then cancel it and get your money back.

Pulkovo airlines and Air Baltic are also cheap.

I wasn't aware that having an outward ticket was a requirement to enter Russia.

Even if it technically is, I've never had one, and I don't think it's worth worrying too much about if you're entering and leaving across land borders. So long as you know where you're going and how you're leaving Russia, I doubt anyone will actually demand to see a ticket.

If you're really worried, print your intinerary up neatly and clearly on official looking paper and carry a copy of your visa invitation, then if you are questioned about it you can say that you must collect your tickets from the inviting agency. In my experience no-one would argue with that.

Where do you get info that an onward ticket is needed to enter Russia? Is this only for tourist visa or also business visa, etc.?
