Hi,
I’m having some problems in registering my visa.
I obtained my visa through your site and I received a Obikovennaya Gumanatarnya (goal of visit- Molodezhnie svyazi, type 007, I’m here to do work experience) visa for 3 months. I arrived in Moscow on Friday evening and I’m staying in a friend’s flat for a month before looking for a flat of my own to rent.
I read that to register my visa I have to take the relevant documents to the Intel Service office along with a letter from my friend (the “landlord”). We assumed we would have to have this letter checked by the local notarius.
However, speaking to the woman at the Intel service office, she said it was not enough for this letter to be checked by a notarius, but will have to go to the Domupravlenie to register the fact that she is renting a flat to a foreigner. My friend obviously doesn’t want to do this as she will have to pay much bigger taxes etc. Plus the fact that she’s not actually renting a flat to me (I’m just staying there).
The women went onto say that I could register the visa without a letter as it’s of a special type but would have to pay 50 dollars to register it for only 3 weeks and do this again after 3 weeks etc.
This seems excessive and there is no mention of such large fees or the letter having to go through the domupravalenie on your website.
What should I do? Is what this woman is saying true or should the process be a lot simpler? Can we do the letter without going throught the domupravlenie?
Or is it worth finding another way of registering my visa through another service somewhere?
Many thanks,
Kieran |

Here is what you do:
Make a photocopy of your passport, and whenever you leave home, take only the photocopy. If the cops stop you, give them your photocopy and tell them your visa is getting registered by the hotel. If they ask about any other documents, tell them 'sorry, at the hotel too'. This is what I did, and never had a problem. |

I agree with Uday, but it will work only if you are as sure about this trick as he was.
Regarding the registration -- it is actually mentioned on this website that the procedures became more strict in Moscow starting from September 2004. There is a link to it at the first page of the site and you can read about it at http://waytorussia.net/RussianVisa/Registration.html
Your friend doesn't need to register the fact that she is renting the apartment to you -- she could register the fact that you are temporarily (for 3 months) living there (you even said it yourself). It's not hard and it won't have any implications, apart from 1 or 2 hours spent in the queue there. That is the only legal way to do it, and the company we work with, IntelService, prefers to do things in legal way, so that clients don't have problems afterwards. If your friend has very little time, then Intel service can provide the registration, as they told you, for $50 US (it is also stated on the website).
Another alternative you have is to either do like Uday says or to find another agency that will register your visa. I don't know about the quality of their work, and chances are they make a fake registration for you -- I can't guarantee anything. I think Pasha (the guy who also works on this site) knows about some agencies that can provide a legal registration for $30 US. You can contact him at pasha@waytorussia.net or at 8 926 525 8533 -- he will be able to help you. I would recommend you however to go with the option that Intel service proposes if you want to be 100% sure. |

to further add w2r, I found Intel to be extremely useless and unhelpful, when I tried to register me visa, I didn't have me landing card (the train conductor never returned it), so they refused to register and suggested I try to find the train conductor (!!) and ask for the card.
I spoke with a mate who works at a travel agency in St P, and apparently it is a very common problem when taking the train for them not to hand back the landing card, but said any decent agency should still be able to register it. That said, I never bothered after that and was problem free. |

Thanks for your help Dmitiri, and please pass my big thanks onto Pasha. He was a big help and I've now sorted out all the problems.
Suffice to say, I didn't go through Intel Service to do it, as they still tried to charge me 50 dollars for every 3 weeks of my stay in order to register, and denied there was a mention of doing it for a one off payment of $50 on this website. To quote the woman at their office, "That website must be wrong".
Cheers again,
Kieran |
