read all the articles and so very depressing-I am so glad that I live in the states! But I worry now about my friends in Russia and thier future. It's easy for us to say move from there but that does not solve the problem(s). What a mess! It's definitely going to take all these petro dollars to fix everything. I think with the introduction of credit and mortgages a society can be built. Suburbia needs to also happen where jobs and growth are created. Corruption needs to sieze. Foreign know how and investment needs to come into play which means privatization and capitalism. Tourism needs to grow. Anyway all these people are educated over there-obviously not enough to fix this mess.

They likely can't. Many of them are too old and the only language they know is Russian. So moving is difficult.

It's definitely going to take all these petro dollars to fix everything.
And then some. But oil and gas will likely only last another 50 years, and then what? As for me, I might or might not be dead by then.

Suburbia needs to also happen where jobs and growth are created. Corruption needs to sieze.
A lot needs to happen before surburbia takes place. And you're correct, corruption needs to cease. But even more importantly, there needs to be a functioning justice system and a welcoming investment climate.

Foreign know how and investment needs to come into play which means privatization and capitalism.
As long as Putin continues to scare off foreign investment, it will be tepid.

Tourism needs to grow.
Although tourism is better than no tourism, tourism ain't gonna make you rich. That's a very fickle industry with typically low profits and low prospects. Just look at Mexico or many South American countries. And they have the advantage of being warm all year.

Anyway all these people are educated over there-obviously not enough to fix this mess.
Russian people are bright people, so it isn't the lack of intellect. Instead, it is the lack of desire by those in power to allow everyone to enjoy the spoils. Russia needs to create a more entrepreneurial climate. It needs to welcome foreigners. It needs to participate fully in international affairs in a cooperative manner.

I sincerely hope progress is made.

Absolutely! Tourism attracts foriegn investment...you don't know unless you go! Yes most people can't move from Russia and that wasn't my point-we don't want them to move. Yes Putin needs to welcome foriegn investment into his country. And they need law and order. Communism manifesto said that if you got control of a generation then you could get control of a society. This needs to happen and perhaps it is. If people are raised on corruption and tolerating it then this is what is acceptible. Needs to change! Yes the people there are very bright...but if you are not bright enough to stand for what is right then what good is intellect-it won't accomplish anything! The people who founded the US were all bright, hard working and sacrificed everything they had to create a society. Thier wealth, personal possessions, sons and daughters, leterally risked everything! This is what needs to happen in Russia. Russian mindset needs to change-too worried about image and wealth and showing it.

My point Surfguy is that the other attributes are more important before worrying about tourism. If people come for a visit and just learn of the corruption, that'll only serve to confirm their opinion that Russia is a dangerous place and one not worth investing in. So law and order, and all that other stuff need to happen first.

Russian citizens remain in a difficult position. It'll be interesting to see how it all works out in the end. Smile

Well I went there as a tourist and I saw all sorts of opportunities and ways that things could be better. Driving is a recent topic on the forums. It's simple...abide by rules and things will operate more smoothly and less accidents and fewer deaths. Law enforcement! The metro-people being curteous will greatly change how bad the metro is at rush hour. This boils down to personal behavior-people in Russia are only concerned with themselves! Greed-leads to curruption. Greed isn't just about money either. Ok I laughed when I was there at all the flash and the display of wealth and image. Most of us laugh at the people who are this way in the states. I guess only time will tell-but after reading these articles-things seem hopeless. The masses need to have hope and a way to get ahead.

The LA Times story is factual although I cant help but observe that it is rather hyped up to sell newspapers.
Having just returned from my fourth trip to Russia since 2000 I have to say that the incidence of public drunkeness has noticeably decreased since I was there in 2004.
Also there was not one sighting of anyone dropping dead of heart attacks or injecting drugs, something I would surely expect to see in the three months I was there travelling the country from east to west if I had read the Times article before I went.
On the contrary people were noticably more cashed up, and positive. Younger people were either in employment or studying, and, while there is room for a lot of progress it seemed to me that the russian people are doing it in there own way.

Have you noticed lately, all the news reports on Russia on the CBC news? I wonder if we just placed a journalist there. I think its great. I wonder if there is much news from Russia, in America. Or anywhere else, for that matter.

In Australia we get half an hour of Russian news on our multicultural chanel 6 days per week. As well if anything significant happens there it makes the mainstream news.

Kesha: Yes, true enough...I hope one day I do go...I have other dreams first.

Yorbcbud: Yes, cbc does have a journalist stationed in Russia. If I recall correctly, it is a guy. They recently had a foreign journalist correspondents dinner or something where they all retold stories. I recall there being a correspondent for Russia.
