Have you noticed lately, all the news reports on Russia on the CBC news? I wonder if we just placed a journalist there. I think its great. I wonder if there is much news from Russia, in America. Or anywhere else, for that matter.

The death of the journalist was covered a bit in the major papers. I read a Wall Street Journal artcile on that yesterday. There was some coverage of the Putin's visit to Germany. But it's really below the radar here. Most people don't care that much about Russia. Most newscasts as well as major newspapers over the last week primarily focused on North Korea's nuclear test, unending violence in Iraq, Mark Foley's scandal and the upcoming elections.

A short while back, there was a report from Russia about gays. With all the bashing that I've heard about, it surprised me to see that many gays are just ignoring the prejudiced remarks. It seems like Russian gays are at the point where north american gays were at some years back, but the gays that they interviewed, didn't feel particularily persecuted by the general public. It seems as though Russia is going through a lot of the social changes that we experienced over here years ago. Still seems like a rather closed country.

The articles make Russia sound like a post-nuclear nightmare.

I guess the majority probably misses the old Soviet days. Who gives a rat’s ass about freedom if your life is going to be centered on vodka, watching your family fall apart and waiting for your turn to die? How are the masses meant to have motivation?

In some ways, Russia is starting to look like Mexico and Brazil. Strong economies that don’t materialize into the well-being of the people.

No I haven't heard of it lately but in the early 90's there were a couple of docos made by the Brits and Aussies about death squads in rio that routinely rounded up street kids.

One of the great things Brazil has is a general happiness atmosphere. However, ignorance is the truth behind it. The poor majority is so ignorant they think living in misery is a normal thing. It’s fate. Nothing can be done. So Brazil is a medieval society, where the rich and middle classes (less than 20% of the population) enjoy their comfort, while poor classes are basically conformed about their situation. Things don’t change, and everyone is happy.

Now look at Russia. Like Brazil, in Russia many are poor, and richness is concentrated in the hands of a select few (who incidentally achieved their position by robbing the State in the early 90s). The difference between the countries is education. In Russia the poor mass is very well educated and aware of the situation, thus, there seems to be a general atmosphere of negativism and pessimism due to a real sense of unfairness.

Both countries have potential, but the future is very uncertain in either case. Having potential is one thing, achieving results is a completely different matter. Brazil has constantly failed, now let’s hope Russia has better luck.

Why do you guys think Brazil and Mexico are better places to live in?

Though I don't have in depth detailed knowledge of social issues in Russia, it seems to me being poor in Brazil is a lot worst than being poor in Russia.

Compared to their Latin American counterparts, Russia has almost no urban violence (the random type, like kidnappings, armed robberies, invasions of apartment buildings by fully armed gangs, stuff like that). Also, while the poor in Russia have very little, I believe there's no starvation and people at least live indoors, or the winter would take care of them. In Brazil many live in the infamous “favelas”, places that would make poor Russians living in the countryside probably flinch in fear and disgust. To top it off, public services are extremely primitive in Brazil. Transportation simply sucks, and public education and health is basically a joke. More than 70% of the population is incapable of writing a coherent 20 lines essay.

In the other hand, I think if you are reasonably rich or at least occupy a stabilized middle class position in Brazil, you will be fine, save for the violence. Actually, you will probably be better of than the rich and middle class Russians, having access to a more comfortable, westernized style of living.

About Mexico, from reading Latin American statistics and talking to a close friend of my sister, it's a very similar scenario if compared to Brazil's.

Although that’s true, kidnappings and invasions of apartment buildings have currently become the main violence related problems.

No such thing in Russia.
