Hi, i would like to travel to travel from Beijing to Moscow via Ulan-Bataar, on the Trans-Mongolian route, next June/July. I plan to stop in Irkutsk/Lake Baikal and maybe some other places too. Can anyone advise me the best way to go about obtaining visa sypport and visa registration? Can anyone recommend a hotel/hostel in Irkutsk that will provide with the documents I need and register my visa for me on arrival, without needing to stay there for the whole time I'm in Russia? (as I understand it you can get visa support without actually having pre-booked every night's accomodation in Russia from places that will say you are staying with them for 30 days even if you only stay one night, and then you are free to go elsewhere?? The problem is most places offering this service seem to be in Moscow and I won't be in Moscow as my first stop?!) Thanks very much! Very Happy

there are only 3 hotels in irkutsk who deals with registration - "russ", "angara", and "baikal hotel" and they register you only when you stay there and just for the period you stay at he hotel. they do not register all your visa. but you can get an invitation from a tourist company and they will register your visa for all period. i can help.

PM or mail me and I'll give you contact info. I don't know if i'm allowed to post it here. It's kind of advertising Smile

For visa support and registration please provide with the following info: surname, name, nationality, passport number/valid till, date of birth, dates of arrival in Russia and of departure from Russia, your route in Russia (cities planned to visit). On your arrival in Irkutsk they will register your visa for the whole period of your stay in Russia. You even shouldn't stay at hotels at all Wink

I know guys who can help to arrange tickets either - also PM for details.

Hello, I will be in Irkutsk this summer and I have 2 questions related to accommodation. Is it possible to rent an aparment (we are 3) only for a weekend? In case of being possible, do they register your visa or can we go some hotel and pay for this? Thank you

Well, you can rent an apartment for a weekend. It's not a problem if you speak Russian. You can find a flat for a night in newspapers or ask realtors. But those guys who offer flats do not work with registration. Hotels are not interested to register people when they do not stay at these hotels. So you have to ask for registration at tourist companies (of course if you've got a tourist visa) or stay at the hotels or hostels who do registration. And you'd better to order a flat in advance that not to look for it on arrival Wink

Thanks Queen! We already got accommodation but I have another question. Is Baikal lake going to be frozen in mid May? In that case, is it worth it to go to Olkhon Island when is frozen?

Well, usually there is no connection with Olkhon Island till mid May. The ice is not good anymore - about a month ago a car of guys from Irkutsk has sunk. So you can't cross by ice. BUT all depends on weather. If I were you I'd try to get there. Last year I've crossed to Olkhon on 1st of May. It was the 1st day when strong wind moved the ice and the 1st boat crossed to the main coast and back... even if the ferry doesn't go yet, there can be small boats of fishermen there. You can't plan anything but you can try Wink It's not necessary to book accommodation there - anyway as there is no connection then there are no tourists, so Nikita & Natasha Bencharovy will host you anyway (I bet you're going to stay with them). Good luck. If you need any help - just let me know.

Thank you Reina. We will be in Irkutsk from thursday 12th of May till sunday 15th that will take a train soon in the morning. The accommodation we had didn´t work because it was 1/2 hour from the city center so I would appreciate if can please send me some information about your hostel in a PM.
Also I would appreciate any suggestion about what to do those 2 1/2 days in Irkutsk. We were thinking on one day go to Listvyanka and come back to Irkutsk with the hydrofoil, and no idea about the other day and a half since Olkhon Island seems to be pretty far away plus lake might be frozen. Thank you!

Hello Reina. I don´t know if you got my pm but answering your questions we are 3 and we look for a not very expensive hostel in the city center. We just got all the train tickets and we arrive from Ulan Ude the 12th of May at around 0600 p.m. and leave Irkutsk to Vladivostok the 15th in the morning. I had another question. Since we will be only for 1 day and in Irkutsk a little less than 3 complete days. Do we have to register our visa in any of those cities or we can do it once we arrive in Moscow? Thank you Reina

You can register the visa once - you should decide where. I can advise you a tourist company in Irkutsk where they register your visa for all the period then it's not necessary to be registered in Moscow. And of course you can be registered in Moscow only - just keep all the tickets to prove that you didn't stay in any city for more than 3 days otherwise they will want you to pay penalty.
I've sent you the info about hostels yesterday. Which one have you chosen?
