The last few months comfy shoes seem to be in. I've spotted a significant reduction in senseless and numbing stilettos walking the streets.
Just don't wear sneakers if you plan to dance...
Frankly I find too much of the 'fashionable' clothes in Russia are cheap imitations and therefore rather poor in taste (and quality). Ugh. Well, so long as the guys like it... who cares right? |

I guess Russians like to dance and dress up. Good!!!!!
Makes me want to hurry up and make new friends in Russia. I am a redhead, would I fit in?

You'll fit in better than me.
However it gets cold and windy in the evenings, wear the mini-skirt at your own risk! Even if you dress like a hooker, you'll probably just be mistaken for a girl trying to be fashionable. |

Natashadln,
Thanks for your input. I guess the hobble skirt is not the fashion there in Moscow. Could you tell me what is the most popular casual wear for the russian women so I may blend with the women in Russia. Since you live in moscow could you tell me how cold it can be. I still have awhile before visiting moscow in the fall of 2007, I plan on staying for awhile there. I am curious because I will travel alone there and I don't know what to expect.
Thanks!!!

Wear boots! I saw a lot of pointy-toed stiletto boots, fur-trimmed boots, botos with embroidery on them, boots with other details on them. Boots with jeans tucked into them, boots with skirts, boots with pants. I realised that Russians like to wear a lot of "warm" colors - reds, peaches, golds - and I didn't really see too many blues on people. Maybe it's because it's so cold outside, they want warm colors?
I didn't really see "casual wear" as we Americans think of it. I saw maybe three people wearing sneakers the entire time I was in Moscow - and they were all old ladies. The way Russian women dress is how us Americans would dress if, say, we were going on a first date to a trendy restaurant.
Black and white seemed to be very popular, too. I saw a lot of black and white coats on women. Wear a scarf and you'll blend in, too!
In the fall, it's going to be VERY cold, so wear sweaters and turtlenecks as much as you can. Wearing black will blend you in!
Hope that helps a little, even though I just visited Moscow for a short time. |

Fashion rule of thumb--when in winter wear 'winter' colours: blacks, browns, blues, grays etc. When in summer blind everyone with neon and pastels.
Who could ever go wrong with boots? Or black? They don't look so dirty after a short walk in mud and puddles in every other season except summer (aka winter).
Just remember that fashion here is rather seasonal. |

to look nice in winter boots are good but fasion boots point toe black red you do not need wear stiletos normal 2 inches highest is ok you can by them in moscow with fur at the top. pencil skirt down toboot top. black skirt or brown. a mini is nice ander a long coat. in hot day prety color is best. russian womans likes makeup a red or pink lipsteck. carry your items in day in handbag to not look tourist. i do not unerstand why western womans wear large bags on the back it is not eligant. in messge was said russian wear like on first date. i do not understand whats this mean
maybe this help you |

| I think the bag on the back is now passe and really was a casual look. Really fashions are so varied depending on where you live. Even here in the states we can always tell tourists, city fashions are different from those who live else where. And the different states vary too. And then there is other countries. It's great though and as they say when in rome do as the romans do...or as I like to say when in rome...do the romans |

That was a good post, Natasha. It's nice to have a Russian lady's voice on these matters.
jojo: try looking at some of the fall/winter collection in fashion mags from Europe. Even ELLE is a good bet.
It sure is fun to talk about clothes and fashion and what to wear in Moscow, but when it comes down to packing your travel suitcase, those fashion rags and ideas may have to be thrown out the window and you'll probably have room for only 1 set of dressy clothes. You'll be wrapped up in a coat most of the time (so you end up showing off your boots), and fashionable coats may be too much to spend on for a one-time trip. You get the idea... but either way we girls will always have too much luggage! |

| Didn't Jo Jo mention that she was going over there next fall? Who knows by then things can be different and also the weather might be too depending on which period of fall. |

| Highly doubt the last few years' of fall fashion would suddenly take a radical turn for the weird and wonderful... either way fashion forecasts would get it right more often than the weatherman. |

This summer in Krasnoyarsk, Orange was the "in" colour. Looked good too, but as Mediashark mentioned, seasonal at best.
Natashadln,
"Dress like they are going on a date" means that your average Russian woman dresses like she has been asked to go to a restaurant/movie/theatre by a guy.
It is a truism that the majority of Russian women try to look their best (for the prevailing conditions) when going out of the house. You'll find tracksuits and the like are reserved for train travel or dacha's, and even then trackies are changed into "street wear" before they get off the train.
From a guys perspective although the clothing worn may be the same you can tell a chippy a mile away, even in Russia.
Pack an LBD as it's acceptable wear any time of year.
Listen to the ladies re shoes. Because Krasnoyarsk is on a River there can be mud (supefine silty mud) and every woman there has 2" heels or platforms simply to protect feet and trousers from getting coated.
Oh yeah, if you are like Imelda Marcos, you'll be in shoe heaven in Russia.
