Would anyone know what the process that it would take to transport a car from the United States to Moscow?

Is this a really expensive process and not worth it?

Do you have to take a new drivers test in Russia for new plates and license?

Shocked

What do you plan to do with this vehicle then ? Leave it in Russia or take it somewhere outside ? If you import this vehicle on "temporary import",
you do not need to change plates, but you need to take this vehicle outside border in 6 months. If you plan to leave it here, you will need to pay custom taxes ( about 2$ per each cm3 of displacement ), then decide what to do with red turn lights and orange headlights, then get new plates.
You need to obtain russian driving licence if you will live in Russia for more than 6 months.
I have nothing to say about transportation process ( by ferry ) itself.

I planned on staying in Russia for awhile more than six months', yes I would travel outside some but I hear the roads are very bad. It seems to be a pain to transport. What do you mean about red turn lights and the orange headlights? When I get my drivers license do I have to take a driving test?

You need to pass only theory exam to obtain driving license.

European standarts of road legal vehicle differs from US. Rear turn lights are red on US vehicles and yellow on european vehicles. Vehicles that are permanently imported inside Russia shall comply with standarts. I'm not sure if these rules are strictly enforced.
If you import such vehicle temporarily these rules are not applied, but you must take it out of border ( and back again ) at least once in 6 months.

It sounds like too much trouble to go through all of that, especially taking it out of the border.

Well, since I am 100% girl here I do not know anything about cars, would it damage a car sitting in a storage unit for a period of time?

Well...a car in storage shouldn't be a problem...just disconnect the battery. Also maybe have someone drive it a couple of times just to keep the fluids circulating. And also check the air in the tires from time to time.

Leave your American car in America. There are many reasons even beyond what has already been posted.
In moscow, you should master the use of the metro, tramvai and trolleybus systems. Perfectly adequate for most people's needs. In moscow, a taxi can either be yellow (expensive) or any old car that stops for you when you put your hand out. You then negotiate and provided you exercise common sense this practice is not dangerous. Note it is old russian cars that tend to stop as people driving newer cars don't need the money.
Then having seen the standards of the roads and the driving "skills" of the russian, you might wish to rent car if you wish to travel further afield. I suggest a fairly basic korean KIA or DAEWOO which can be had for around USD30 per day. You may need the language skills of a russian friend to help you. Normally, hire companies would require you to have an international driving permit in addition ot your own national photo license. This is really only necessary because the i.d.p. has a russian page in it. I don't know if the Americans have i.d.p.'s but the best way is maybe to ring one of the big rental agencies in moscow and ask what documents they require. Don't rent from them though as they cost way too much.
