I've just watched a program about the highest award for bravery for British and Commonwealth (countries that were part of the British empire) military. I wondered what the equivalent was in Russia, and if their stories are still told, or were they not told because of the Soviet ethos of collectivism.

There is also an animal version called the Dickin medal, being a cat lover I discovered there was only one cat to recieve it. This was after the ship he was on was shelled (1947 in China) and he was hit by shrapnel. He survived and went from bed to bed in the ships hospital cheering up the sailors and killing rats .He also received a campaign medal and was promoted to "able seacat" (able seaman being the human version) He even has his own exhibition in the Imperial War Museum in London.

Sorry if he cat bit bored people, but I would be interested in answers to the question.

Cheers

What a coincidence. For the last hour I was scouring the net for pictures of a specific set of soviet uniform--A KGB high-ranking officer (Col. to Major General) that was used just before the KGB was officially dismantled (80s-90s) and renamed FSB/SVR. Why, well, for research for a fictional story.

The only recollection I had of it was an artistic reproduction of a photograph taken of a KGB junior-ranking officer (if I remember) in the late 80s. At that time the colour scanner was non-existant in many places, including in the school library, so I actually took out my coloured pencils and paints and copied out every detail in full colour... but alas, the picture is still in a packing boxe several thousand miles away!

This is a really good site:

And another one... mostly hats

If memory serves me right, some of the Imperial medals have been restored during Yeltsin's time.

I don't know how many animals were actually awarded medals in wartime, but I thought you might find it interesting as to the role animals played in wartime http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=feature/week2006/vw_edres/animalswar_news/animal_poster
