Daniel,
Once the Visa is registered with OVIR, that is all that is required. You do not need to re-regsiter anywhere else as the registration lasts for the length of the Visa validity.

You need to re-register your visa in every city/town you stay longer than 3 working days. However, if you already have one registration, there's always a possibility that you arrived just two days ago Smile if you know what I mean... Also, if you already have one registration, the border guards usually don't bother at all.

Dmitri,
Maybe it's just beauracracy gone mad, but why would OVIR require separate registrations if the Visa is registered for the entire length of stay? I can understand a tourist visa needing re-registration every three days if in different cities as these Visa's are only registered for "x" days. Not an entire month or something.....

Daniel,
Whatever the correct answer is, get it registered. If you have some sort of OVIR stamp you'll avoid any problems.

UsualSuspect,

OVIR doesn't actually care about these stuff, and passport control at the airport too -- they just need to see one stamp, and it's good if it's for the whole period.

The only problem is in cops, who might stop you to check your documents. They will see a stamp from Moscow and tell you: "Ok, that's for Moscow, but what about St. Petersburg where you are now?" Officially, you should register in St. Petersburg, so for them it's another possibility to make some money (on a fine).
Actually, I doubt it any policeman will speak enough English to ask this simple question, but if he does and you don't have a registration, you can follow the advices from http://waytorussia.net/RussianVisa/Registration.html -- either tell them the registration is in the hotel and propose them to go there (or better -- to your embassy directly), or tell them you arrived 2 days ago (you need to register 3 days after you arrive).

At the moment i am teaching English for 2 schools in Ekaterinburg despite the fact that i have a Trinity college cert and am shite.About a month ago i was walking towards the city center and 2 Militia stopped me and checked my documents .I have 2 registration stamps , one stamp was what the Hotel Rossiya (Moscow) gave me and the other stamp was from a Bogstandard hotel in Ekaterinburg. Both stamps were for one night only.I asked the receptionist in Ekaterinburg that i wanted the reg for the whole duration of my 3 month business visa but she was having none of it.The militia noticed this and said that i must go to the station with them or else i would be handcuffed but after an escorted 10 min walk ,we reached a side street which was as dark as the" black hole of Calcutta".The Gobshite of the two then said "You give us 100 roubles and you can go" So i did Wouldn't you?.While they were escorting me this milita who looked about 21/22 kept calling me a "Big Bastard" I tried to change the subject to football "Chelsea Roman Abrahamovich? te navritsa? But he kept giving me a thick look before giving me a salute and waving me on my way, he even shook my hand beforehand.I am now staying in a half decent hostel but it doesn't register your visa.
