Are there any big department stores in Moscow like Wal-mart or Target?
If not, are there stores similar to Wal-mart or Target?

Opps sorry, the store that I was thinking about is an Ikea store, you pass it on the way to SVO airport. I know Walmart was thinking about Russia, but I don't know if they have opened a store.

There is Ashan which is basically the same as Wal-Mart except it's French-owned. There is also Metro Cash and Carry, Stockmann and a couple of similar Russian stores. Most of these places are an effort to get to though - on the outskirts or even outside the city.

Thanks for answering my question, but I am curious, why is it hard to get too?...

They're not really hard to get to, just time consuming. If you have a car or take a taxi then it's fine. But it's not much fun taking crowded public transport to the outskirts of Moscow or beyond and it's even worse carrying your purchases back.

there are 3 mega's ( western style huge shopping malls ) in moscow now. and if you go shopping at one, you can take a taxi back, no problem for around 700ru. i always shop at ashan first, take all my crap to ikea, drop it off there, finish up in the rest of the stores, and then get what i need at ikea, and take their taxi back. its great.

i dont know how hard they are to get 2, it just depends on where you live, i guess. i live in the center, and for me, i just ride the metro for 35 minutes, take a free bus, or marshutka, and am there in 20 min.

the other way is a 2 min metro ride, and then a 30 minute marshutka ride.

They even sell their own domestic brands for very cheap prices.

700ml ðàæíàÿ âîäêà "ÍÀØ" brand for 70rb, frozen beef chunk 1kg for 125 rb, tires, alarm clock, tv, radio, bicycle, fresh vegs, ice creams, clothes & etc.

jo jo - Remember that Moscow (like New York) is a very congested and densely populated city. You will not find Walmart or Target in the center of New York. And you will not find one in the center of Moscow for the same reason. Large box stores require a lot of space. In the center of Moscow, the space is very valuable (actually, some of the most expensive in the world right now). SO you can find large Walmart-like stores on the outskirts of the city. Driving a car in the middle of Moscow is a pain (huge traffic jams). Taking a subway train with a merchandise is inconvenient.

There are lots of smaller supermarkets and expensive clothing and other stores closer to the center. The same is true in St Petersburg. You can find newer large supermarkets and hypermarkets on the outskirts of the city where the land is cheaper and it's easier to drive.

Thanks Spicey, I'll probably take the train since I use to in NY and feel quite comfortable doing so...

Unless you are transporting something equivalent in size to a huge plasma tv you will probably be ok on the metro, as long as you avoid the peak times. having said that, I have seen a large cupboard and a fairly large fridge on the St P metro. Very Happy

I think that is crazy to take stuff that large on a train. I would rather sit in the traffic for hours until I got home with something that big. I cannot imagine how heavy that is and to me the wait in a car would be less trouble on the body.

For some people it's still the only option. After you have been you will have a far better understanding of everyday Russian life.
