Hello my friends , please help. The more I read about obtaining visa the more I am getting confused. Heres the short of it. Am going to Kazan in May via Frankfurt Germany hopefully for the whole month, am staying at a flat with the help of a visitation paper. My questions are , should I start doing papers now? What are the chances of getting turned down? Will I have to go to consulate in person? These are just some questions I have now. Any response will be deeply appreciated.

As a common sense rule I wouldn’t postpone everything until the last minute, so yes, you should start collecting necessary documents now. You don’t have to apply for Russian visa in person, most do it by mail. My advice to you is to find your local Russian Consulate‘s web page and read info pertaining to Visa requirements.

Here’s a link to my local Consulate as an example:

there is one more question that is bothering me also. It asks if you have ever been to jail? Will you be denied if say yes, I had a dwi 12 years ago, have not been back since, :>) What if you say no? I have looked at that website. All the questions they ask are ok with me but that one.

I’m afraid you're going to have to decide on your own if you want to take this risk and conceal your criminal record information, there's always a chance of backfire...
Try calling the Consulate, describe your situation and ask if it would be a problem…

I'll give you my opinion on your dui question.
Do not answer yes.
You were convicted of a misdemeanor, not a felony.
Again, this is just my opinion.

I would be willing to bet that they are referring to Prison and not a night's stay in Jail for a DUI...I'd answer no

There's no doubt about it - they're asking if "you've ever been arrested or convicted for any offense". If you were arrested because you look like the Son of Sam and spent 2 seconds in jail before they realized that you were the wrong guy, you'd technically have to answer the question yes.

Having said that, though... you'd have to be a complete moron to answer yes to that question. You're not gonna get a visa if you do - you'll have to have an interview with a counselor officer.

I know plenty of people who would technically have to answer yes to that question who said NO and got a visa. I do know a guy who said YES and did not get a visa, but his conviction (and prison sentence) were for hard drug distribution.

So... your mileage may vary. 12 years is a long time ago. I know what I'd say.
