Avoid the sushi restaurant with the outdoor seating on Nevsky near the bridge over the Fontanka. And if you do go, since the location is good, in the summer, order tempura or drinks only.

Laughing it's like this episode in Simpsons, when Homer went to a Japanese restaurant and ate this poisonous fish... Hope it's less serious than that...

You did not say what you did not like about it but after eating there several times, since it was right around the corner from where I lived last summer. The attraction is location and price. They had a special running all summer that was all-you-can-eat for 450R which for SPb sushi is cheap. It is not for sushi lovers however aimed at kids who want to be seen and tourists.
I've seen a rapid growth the number of sushi restaurants opening in St Petersburg over the last 18 months, at least 30 I know of. If you want upscale sushi try Silk on Mala Konyushennaya . Elegant modern minimalist decor and good food. My favorites are moderate priced Viktor on Bolshaya Morskaya and one I don't even remember the name, but it is on my walk home and open very late on Italyanskaya between Arts Square and Sadovaya. They have a sidewalk dining in the summer also. Another place with is a deal for lunch but pricy for dinner is in the lobby of the Petrovsky Fort Business Center next to the river and St Petersburg Hotel. They have a very nice lunch special for 181 R., probably the best deal in the city for quality sushi.
