Has anyone seen "Bednie Rodstveniki"? (2005) Translated in english as 'Roots' or literally "poor relations". It's playing at the Seattle Film festival next week along with a few other Russian films.

Other titles are "Garpastum", and "Dreaming of Space" (Kosmos kak predchuvstvie). Anyone seen or heard of these?

I saw a part of a film on ARTE (French/German culture channel) that'll do quite well for beginners in learning Russian: 'Baboussia'. It's a 2003/4 French-Russian co-productioon about a granny who has a hard time on her pension and a family unwilling to help her out.

Next to this, it also offers some nice views on the Russian countryside, representative for the way many villages look, the wooden houses, concrete apartment blocks, stamped snow on the roads. This without being over the top, like in an arthouse film I remember having seen some time ago. This was '4' (chetyre) about a girl returning to her parents' village where they make puppets.

I haven't seen all of 'Baboussia', as I just zapped past it, but I'll look it up in the library here soon (I remember I saw it's cover before). I found it amazingly simple to follow the dialogue, couldn't believe it actually. Especially since I've heard several people who claim Soviet cinema is easier for foreigners, as it's language is more pure and it contains less slang.

Has anybody seen the film Blockade or Блокада? It's a doco about the siege of Leningrad, and will be screening at the Sydney Film Festival next weekend.

I will be down there and plan to see this film and would be interested in any comments on it.

Is it an old B and W one? If it is I saw it when I was still in China as a kid. Scary. "Thank you" Joseph Jugashvilli for letting them eat cats and dogs and even rats.

You should read a book about it too, Nikirushka. More dogs were eaten back then than there ever will be.

No it wouldn't be that one. This one is only made in the last year or so, it would be predominantly B&W though, as it uses a lot of archival footage.

I bet they ate human flesh too during that period. People had to survive by whatever means available.

I've read about it and been to the memorial in St Petersburg, a very sombre experience.

This sounds like an interesting movie to see.

I need a Regency Free DVD player though. I found this out when I purchased some Russian movies.

I tried. I think the best thing to do is to buy a used RF player off of Ebay, but I have hesitated to do that knowing it may not work. I have been renting off of Netflix if I want to see Russian movies. Netflix movies are all ready regency free so you can watch these movies, but I wanted to buy them rather than rent them.

Do you know something I can purchase that I could hook up to my laptop that I could run the movies on or download? A tool?

well a program like Power DVD will let you watch just about any film on your computer. I would rather watch them through the main system though with the full advantage of the big screen and surround sound.

I usually watch from my laptop, I tried to locate a RF player off of ebay and they are hard to get.

I will check this program you mentioned.

thanks

There is great TV-series about rise of the Peter "The Great" I and his close followers. Politic, war, love, history.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081924

Peter The Great is one of most important figures in Russian history. 9 movies each lasts more than one hour.

That sounds like an interesting series, Ender. I'll have to check it out and see if I can find a version with English subtitles.

I just saw the movie "Admiral", which just came out in Russia in October of this year. The lead character of Admiral Kolchak is played by the actor from Nightwatch/Daywatch. I thought it was really good historical movie. The costumes and settings are great.

The last Russian movie I saw on television was Four (4). Rather depressing picture of modern life in Russia. But probably a lot of truth in it.
They are doing a lot of tv-serials now, based on classics. I have been watching The Idiot, Crime and Punishment, Doctor Zhivago and Master and Margerita. Zhivago was rather dull, but they are all very high quality.
Well, another comes to mind. I forgot the title, but it is about a father who comes and takes his two suns to a boat trip to a river island. Very touching!

Of course I have seen a lot of these National Hunting, Fishing and what else. Had to watch them when on a bus between Novosibirsk and Barnaul.
