I'm going home to England tomorrow, and I have 7000 roubles from my pay as an English teacher to take with me. I didn't declare any money when I came in (I didn't bring any) but I'm not worried about that because I know you don't have to declare amounts this small.

My question is: are you actually allowed to take roubles out of Russia? And once out, is it possible to change them back to pounds in England? Someone told me she brought roubles with her when she came from England, but others have told me roubles aren't supposed to leave the country. I could change the roubles into dollars before I go, but it would be less hassle if I did it back home!

Thanks for all your help!

The latest ( jul 2005 ) limitation set is $10K for total amount of currency. You can't export more that $10K. You don't need to declare exporting currency if total amount is less than $3000.
You may lose about 10% if you decide to change roubles in England.

The law might have changed recently but not long ago you weren't supposed to take rubles out of the country. And you couldn't change them anywhere if you did. You'd be better off changing them into pounds in Russia - you'll get a better exchange rate. If you're in Moscow there are a couple of places on Kuznetsky Most and a place on Stoleshnikov Pereulok that always have good rates for pounds.

If you are going to return to Russia after the holidays--- then just keep them in your pocket--- if you are leaving for good ---then change them as they will be no use outside Russia---

I fly back and fore quite often and never even bother to think about it--- usually have 7000-10000 in my wallet

I changed Rubles to Pounds no problem in London. Most places do it.

I probably left Russia with a couple thousand rubles when I left there. I thought my adopted son might want them down the road.
