Would you happen to have any tips, how to get around Peterburg in the night? I haven't found any online timetables or such for busses or trolleys, and at least the metro seems to stop running right after midnight... I had planned to stay at the cheapest hostel I found (All Seasons), but if I have to take a taxi each time I'm staying late at the center, it really kills the point a bit. I'm on a low budget trip for a reason. I was already at SPB a few months back, and was not planning to go again just yet. Then my friends got an idea of spendin the New Year at Peterburg, and I couldn't just resist going with them (It's a brilliat idea after all :) So, now I'm going to SPB with almost no money and propably at the most expensive time possible... :) Clever me!
Of course a cheap place to stay, from a walking distance from Nevsky would solve the problem too... (And my walking distance *is* over one km, but unfortunately not eight...) I already mailed 7 brides hostel, but haven't got an answer so far :(

| Biggest things you need to think about is the canals. They come up at night to allow ships through so you can get stranded till 5am |

| I don't think the bridges will be a problem, since we are going in late December? Or are the canals kept open that long into the winter? |

My question would be: When does the clubs close??? Why would anyone
want to leave before 6 am???
I've not been to russia (yet), but I've been out in Tallinn and Riga and there the night clubs don't throw you out until about 6 am. (If you keep buying drinks they can go on a bit longer).
Also there are usually lots of cheap cafe's etc to stay in until transport is moving again!!
One other option is the notorious 24h game-halls with slot machine. Personally I find gambling booring, but if you buy a coffe/beer you can stay there as long as you like
Look in the guide books for 24hour food places or alike, in one 24h place I found in Tallinn, the lady at the bar actually took a sleep herself (in the bar!!!) so I guess if you pass out there you won't be brutally awakened by some guard as is the case in my country, but mind your dough if you have any left |

| Your right, all public transportation ends between midnight, and 1am. As for the bridges, I may be wrong, but I have never seen them open during the winter months because the rivers, and canals are frozen over. However, the shipping lanes at the mouth of the Neva are kept clear by ice breakers. The Taxi's, after midnight also become scarce too. They are around, but just not many of them. Going to St.Pete during the New Year time is great, and I don't think it is the most expensive time. Spring, and Summer times are far more expensive I think. There is a Hostel maybe two or three blocks from Gostiny Divor, that would put you right in the Centre, but I can't remember the name of the place. Maybe you could research a bit more to locate it? Gostiny Divor is right across from the Grand Europe Hotel. |

I definitely agree.
My favourite favourite place ever is CCCP -- it's this small cafe-cum-club (after party) at around 5AM. It becomes sooo packed with people by 5 or 5:30AM. I stayed at the Grand Hotel Europe and it was a 4-5 minute walk from the hotel. I remember getting out of it like at 8AM. |

Ok, I get your point :)
There might still be someone travelling with me, who wouldn't agree on prowling clubs the night through... But, hey, it's never useful to plan beyond a certain point anyway, we'll see about the rest when we get there...
And I have done my research about SPB accommodation options now too. It's really up to the other people going with me now. Up to, what they want. It's just sad if they all decide they'll pay the extra 10 euros per day for a place closer to the center. I have already decided I'd rather take the place about 8km away from Nevsky and just find my way there and back... Can't be too hard after all, once you think about it. It's just that some of my friends going with me don't speak any russian, and I can understand that they'd feel better if they wouldn't have to try to negotiate the price of the hostel-trip with some stranger in the middle of the night in russian, if they suddenly decide they want to get some sleep :)
But, thanks for the tips anyway! Any of you also planning to go to (or be there already) SPB for New Year? Would be fun to see you there! :) |

Dear Dr. Fauste,
You can forget Your "Raising Time Schedule for the Central Bridges" till late March. The navigation period is over and St. Petersburg authorities are not foolish enough to open the bridges just for fun |
