Actually America has 320 mil, Canada has 32 mil, Russia 140 mil. But I get your point. People come here from everywhere. Canada has a fair number of larger cities, but we have a tenth of your population. Not really a fair comparison at least in numbers. |

| Canada is very liberal with it's open borders...it's not bad...but with 320 million here in the US...that's a huge burden on our tax payers. Well some day I hope to add another 2-3 to the population |

Bush does a lot of pandering. When the issue of mexicans coming in the country, he was on the border patrol band wagon. It is also his Patriot act that targets other races of people. Doesn't happen here. |

Well, that's kind of a silly statement. It prompts the question from the average Canadian "Have you actually been here??". Funny, I go to school and the majority of instructors are not from Canada; they are from everywhere in the world. Actually none of my professors are Canadian (most are Russian, heh) come to think of it. Anyway, that's beside the point. I absolutely agree that the United States has many immigrants (however the States is referred to as a melting pot versus Canada as a cultural mosaic) and much in the way of international culture. But Canada is no different. We to have China town, Little India, Littly Italy, Greektown, etc, etc. All over Canada. Western Canada (like Vancouver) has a lot of Asian culture (so does Toronto, but a lot of Asain immgrants go there) and the East Coast has a lot of Celtic culture. Really, your statement is silly.

I find the comment "and a few other cities" really amusing.. |

Thats one of the problems with American style politics. The federal government has too much power over the states. Here the power is disseminated more amongst the provincial and local governments. Thats why a lot of the infrastucture at the local level has a tough time keeping up. Many local roads and services in America are very bad. My partner here said in his wifes home of Pittsburgh the city streets are almost impassable, because of potholes and deterioration. The local governments have no money to fix them. |

| Notice I put a question mark...and you have no arguement...yes I have been to Canada and have many friends here who have moved from there...so I am not naive. But let's look at the facts...Our state of California has a larger population and a larger economy than Canada...we have bigger cities and more cities then the whole of Canada...so tell me what is your point? Are you trying to measure Canada, Defend Canada, justify Canada? It's Canada...a former British Common Wealth, Has great skiing, Maple Syrup, Hockey, Beer, and some good Bands, other than that...it's Canada...Oh Canada... |

Like I said, you also have ten times the poulation, so it's not a good comparison. But the population of Ca is pretty much the same. The GDP of Ca is 1.5 Billion. Canada's GDP is just over a trillion. Not quite even there.

I wasn't arguing. And I definitely wasn't disagreeing with the United States having a larger population. Many countries don't even come close in terms of population. I was commenting on cultural diversity. Just because you have larger cities or more of them doesn't make the United States more culturally diverse than anything. (If I take ten people who are from different decents and cultures, then my group is a culturally diverse group) Settle down man, I have nothing to defend - just sayin' what I see. |

So what do you think about cultural identity yorbcbud? What makes a Russian a Russian? |

I think a Russian comes from Russia. He speaks Russian. His parents are Russian. If he moves, he is still Russian. I think it's more of starting point than an actual identity. People are just people after all. And change is inevitable......except from vending machines. |

I myself have always seen the world as family. This world has been spinning around a long time. I'm sure just about everyone's related by now.
But that's just me. I myself think it doesn't matter.
I'm what people would call a Mutt. I'm mixed races which are Irish, British, French and Spanish. I was Born in Canada and lived in Russia for a about two years after birth. I'm not of Canadian blood or Russian blood, but i still lived in both places at an early age and speak both French and Russian very well and know much culture about both countries to the point you would think i lived there. But the truth is i don't have a drop of Canadian or Russian blood in me. As far as i know anyway.
I really do think where you come from is good for looking back at your family history, but not so much to make an person of yourself. I'm Multi-Culture and i pretty much love it.
Where you were born is dandy and all, but to me what it comes down to is Bloodlines, which has been mixed between many races by now no doubt. |
