Check out the German Rail site, www.bahn.de. Enter your route & date/time on the upper left hand side of the page. Click on "suchen". Now look to the upper right hand side of the screen and select your language - English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch. Enter your date/time/route info again. Hit search. Click on the route name under "Station/Stop" on the left hand side of the screen. You'll have to have a sense of which train you want - I'm searching for Moscow - Beijing on 9 January and am presented with two options - one that leaves at 21:35 (the 004Z) and one that leaves at 23:55 (the 20CH). Once you've clicked on the station name you'll get a "detailed view" with the train number. Click on the train number & you'll get a very nice detailed listing of all stops and the duration of each stop.
Here's a quick link to a PDF of the 004Z train stops. Figure this will be good for sometime since they don't often change the routing/timing.

I'm absolutely gonna take a few copies of this along with me.

Hi there, I found your pdf file quite usefull. still I'm quite cofused about the time it takes from Ulaan Bator to Beijing: according to my LP guide and to this pdf file, it takes about 1 and half days, whereas if you try to buy a Moskow-Beijing ticket from this website (waytorussia), with stopover in Ulaanbator, the last stretch of the journey (Ulaan Bator-Beijing) it scheduled to take 6 hours (!!!).
any idea? are ther 2 different types of train with different speed or numebr of stops? and if so, how can you choose one or the other when buying a ticket?
cheers

yes, absolutely.
the PDF file represents Moscow to Beijing on the #4 international train. If you travel from Moscow to UB, and stop in UB, and then later continue on to Beijing, you won't be taking the #4 train. You could take the #4 from Moscow to UB (international route), but you wouldn't be able to pick up the #4 from UB to Beijing (even if you waited a few days for the next one to come along).
So... you'd have to pick up a local train from UB to Beijing. |

hm..ok, maybe i got it.
still, when you say 'you wouldn't be able to wait the next one' you mean becasue it'll be full or because of burocratic laws or because of what??
also, whan trying to book tickets with this websites, from moscow to Beijing, I got the following:
Moscow - Irkustuck on train 340 YAch
Irkustuck - UB on train 264
UB to bejing on train 004 which is the one we were talking about, which is scheduled to take 6 hours according to the 'booking' and 1.5 days according to your timetable, which I understood is for train 004 as well.
anyway, do you think UB to Beijing in 6 hours might be ok or is it a bit too fast? I mean, we'd like to take it easy and enjoy the journey , we don't care much about 'saving time'.
but it looks like that from this website you can;t really 'choose' which train to use
thanks

| May not have anything to do with the discrepancy, but don't forget that all Russian trains run on Moscow time. It can be up to 8 hours different in Siberia and the far east. |

Excellent point nikir.
To the OP, I would recommend that you either consult with a firm that sells train tickets to ensure you're getting the best replies (I've used connectrussia.net and have been very pleased with them), or ask your questions over on the Lonely Planet Thorntree board. The moderator there, everbright, is very knowledgable about the trains and often gives very detailed advice.
