oh yea, save what. russians life savings have been wiped out 2wice in the past 20 years, so alot dont save too much money. plus, with the current inflation rate about the same as the interest rate, it couldnt really be considered "saving" , more like just not spending the money.

What is considered "rich" in terms of salaries in Moscow? Also in outer cities such as Kirov, Izhevsk, Ufa? How much US$/month?

Very big difference between poor and rich in Russia. Many people earning about 100-300doll. For them - who earning more than 1000doll are rich people. People who earning more than 800-1000doll think that 2000-5000 and more per month is riches. And so on. In Moscow I think real salary that people here means a worthy of a middle class about 1500-3000doll. Rent here since 500-600doll minimum till endlessness. Vyatskie Polyani were living my relativies - if you earn more than 600-1000doll - you are rich.

Interesting how many Russians (not all) would consider a someone earning $US1000/month as rich. But surely even this would not go far spending it upon luxury items (eg. some imported electronic goods) which are perhaps the same cost as in the West?

Legally or Illegally
Many earn more illegaly than legal.
With Underground economy in Russia, Stats are useless.
Moscow has a lower murder rate than New York, but I am sure it has a higher rate of people dying of natural causes from bullets to the head or the throats slit.

New York's murder rate is down 40%, (427 murders in 2007). Moscow's rate has increased.

Sorry, I deleted some of my post..Actually, Washington DC is the highest right now. New York had 2,245 murders in 1990, (can you imagine that)...so they have decreased alot since then..Moscow in the 2nd city in Europe for murders, but you are right, it is less than NY.
