I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. I am hoping to make a return trip from Moscow to Beijing next year, so I will be entering and leaving Russia twice.

Since I will be with tour groups in both directions, and since the Russian consulate in London is making it more difficult for tourists to get business visas by demanding a letter from your UK company and bank statements, I have decided to use 2 tourist visas.

I know that you are only allowed to hold one valid visa at a time, and so I would have to get my 2nd visa from the embassy in Shanghai or Hong Kong. However, a tour company has just told me that there must be at least one month between the first exit from Russia and the second entry. Is this true? I have never read anything about this before.

Thanks,
r.

Russian Tourist Visa:
This type of visa is issued for the travelers who come to Russia for tourism purposes. This visa is easiest to get and the least expensive of all visas, so it's ideal for tourists. A tourist Russian visa is single-entry or double-entry only and can be valid for the period up to one month. It usually takes the Russian consulate from 1 to 10 days to issue this type of visa and will cost from $50 US to $150 US, depending on the time of processing.
To obtain the Russian tourist visa, you need a tourist invitation. The tourist invitation comprises a tourist voucher and a tourist reservation confirmation. These documents can be issued by a Russian travel agency, which is registred as a tourist company in Russia, has a registration in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), and has a reference number in MFA. All these data should be stated on the invitation.

From this site. Note the underlined portion

Are you staying longer than a month?

I'm sorry. I think you have misunderstood me. Maybe I wasn't clear enough.

Both my stays in Russia would be much less than one month so no problems there.

I am concerned about the interval between the two Russian visits (in Mongolia, China, etc). I want this period to be as short as possible, allowing for a couple of days in UB and obtaining a new visa in China - my budget will be tight.

This travel agent is suggesting that I must remain in China/Mongolia for at least a month before I can reenter Russia on a new tourist visa. This is what has surprised me.

Read the underlined text, you can get a double entry tourist visa. Ask your tour guide about this.

The following text is from the visa support section on this site:

Double Entry visa support available: If you need a double-entry tourist visa, please, mention it in "Your Message" field at the end of this form. Also, specify the both dates (time spans) of your travel to Russia and the country where you are going to travel. With a double entry visa you can only leave to a CIS country (e.g. Ukraine, Kazakhstan, + Baltic States) and not abroad (e.g. NOT to Mongolia, China, Finland).

Note underlined section.

RedVenus: you're right, you can't get a double entry tourist visa if you're traveling to Russia NOT from CIS (and you travel from China). Also, the advice that you were given about allowing at least one month between two tourist visas is not official, but I would agree with it. So, in your case I recommend you to get a double-entry business visa. Like this you won't have to go through the hassles twice. See http://waytorussia.net/Travel/VisaSupport.html for more info.
