Was this film shown in Russia? I went to a theater and found it almost empty but then I reenact the GPA both as a krasnyarmyeets and a German Officer. so the film was very interesting to me, if it has been seen there what about the sets? does it look authentic or contrived? Some wise guys call the film Enema at the gates, but I think its like trying to act like you are superior by criticising everything. I rate it right up there with Saving Private Ryan or any of the world war two films I enjoy. but then I am a retired career soldier too.

It was good. However, I liked "Stalingrad" better. Well, I can't say "liked", it was a tragic situation for Russia. But, a very well made movie, nonetheless. An epic, anti-war film. http://www.warfarehq.com/index.php?page=reviews/movie_stalingard.shtml

This film is complex mix of truth, lie and innocent fantasy. A typical successor of "Saving Private Ryan". For those who want a real picture of Great Patriotic war i'd recommend: "Idi i smotri" ("Come and See")

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/

Warning: This film is extremely scaring and cruel. Make sure you have tough nerves.

There are other two good movies. They are soften. The first one is more epic, the second one is more dramatic and cruel.

"Oni srazhalis za Rodinu" ("They Fought for the Motherland") and the "Zvezda" ("The Star"). Look at IMDB for details.

I saw this on UK TV about 15 years ago. A stunning film - "stunning" in like being hit over the head with a brick, totally unlike feelgood Hollywood films. Did they really shoot the cow when making the film?

Who knows? Cows get killed in thousands every day, so one more one less. For me it is completely not important fact about movie.

If a cow has to be sacrified for the need of a scene in a movie, they usually don't use special effect for that. The cow is killed in real, I remember a scene in "apocalypse now" : a cow is killed in a very cruel way with a machete.
