Could this also (slightly) be an aesthetics/dental issue? Orthodontics and aesthetic dental work is too expensive for many. And, people do get self-concious if their teeth aren't perfect. Especially these days, with the TV media constantly bombarding Russians (and everyone else - elsewhere) with images of people with perfect teeth. |
Firstly it is true that some people smile with closed mouth because their tooth are in bad shape.
Secondly, in Europe people don't think that smiling with your tooth is a big thing. Our culture isn't as tooth focused as yours. Closed-mouth smile is good enough for us. For your smile there is an expression "американская улыбка" and it is not as positive as you might hope. Smiling with tooth is widely seen as pretending and fake smile, which doesn't present true feeling of happiness or joy.
Look for pictures of kids. Here even kids smile with lips sealed, it is just our the way to smile here. And the same goes for Russia and for all of the Europe.
For surfguy, I am not oppressed when I smile with my lips sealed. |

I have smiled with my lips closed. I don't always show my choppers. I think a smile with lips closed is sexy. |

Closed lip smiles are in fact nice and sexy...I give those too. Smiles are varied and so our thier meanings...the more often and the more smiles that we are exposed to the better at learning them we become. There are lots of fake smiles out there and usually we recognize them...Russians who think that American smiles are fake think so because they have know understanding of us or because the smile is infact fake. Why is it fake...well if I give off a fake smile to someone...usually that would be because I have no respect for that person and they warrant a fake smile. But that is just me. If I was going to be mean then certainly they would know that too. But I will say this...I see plenty of Russians, Europeans, etc. etc. who all are friendly and they smile...but talking to most who travel and many will say...and it is recognized world wide...Russians offer lousy Service at the Hotels, and do not Smile. It is what it is. My personal experiences is that I have seen both good and bad there in Russia...just as I have the world over so it is what it is I guess. But I like to smile...I like positiveness in my life and I try to give it off too. Well at least some of the time.
ANd the most common compliment given by people to other people...is:
You Have a Nice Smile!
Gee I wonder why? And when this is said...usually actually almost always it is returned with a smile. |

Probably they did not have the wonderful life you're having. If they could only go to DeVry or work as a bails agent, they would be smiling all day long. |
Didnt go to Devry and didnt ever get fired from a job like you have, hence your not being able to vacation as long as you want. Oh boo hoo.

Why did you assume that I got fired from a job? I actually found another job with a higher management responsibility and a better pay than the previous one. I worked for 4 years at the previous firm and was looking for a better opportunity. They were sad to see me go and said that would hire me I ever wanted to go back. So shut up, sit quiet and observe - you have a lot to learn. That's right - you have not gone to DeVry. Actually, you have not gone to any college. Maybe it's a good time to do so now. After all, education is the best investment nowadays in the US. |

I think that when Russians visit America they should have the same respect and lock their face in the vault and Smile as a courtesy even if they hate it and against their beliefs. I guess it just takes a certain degree of character from both cultures and mutual respect for the two countries to refrain from their self-centerness for just a small smiggen of time. |
When you will be travelling the Russia you can smile as much as you want. Nobody will be against this. |

Thanks Ender, I am glad that somebody else has an opinion on it. There were 2 very nice Russian ladies who only been in America a year, one who cannot speak english, the other very little and they smiled at me. These women were very sweet and they are going to help me with my russian, but what surprised me is, they smiled at me first. If they didn't like to smile they really had a hard time proving it because they sure enjoyed themselves when we spoke and laughed in a conversation. They were very pleasant people. |

This mean that these ladies was really happy to meet you. "No fake smiles" - the one of Russian mottos. |

I have friends who can spot a Russian person in a crowd. And it's not always meant in a nice way.. But I guess I can't blame anyone, people around here are still bitter towards everything Russian.
Oh, and by the way, Finland calling. |

Well, I don't blame them; there are few bad moments in the history of Finland involving Russia / USSR. |

Not really. I know lots of people in Helsinki. No anti-Russian sentiments there. |
