Hi. I would like to know if anyone had any information on how to study as a foreign student in a russian university. (transfer from US college to russian one) I have read that russian education is really high quality and lower cost. And that it is possible to transfer to one, just it is not done very often.
For my part I think it would be a great adventure for me, just right for a college experiance. I have always wanted to see the world and Russia more specifically, and experiance it for a bit longer and more intimatley than just a vacation. Smile I would love to get to know alot about it and the people on personal level.
I go to a community college in the US and I have great grades. Mostly As and some Bs. (which I will pull up to straight As next semester and year...) But I don't have so much money. I am trying to sell my parents on the idea of helping me pay for a russian university with the argument that it is the best education available and low price just like I never left home at all! Heh. A very econmical choice.. :-p I know that may not be entirely true but I have heard it is significantly less money in Russia for a higher level of schooling comparitivley. So anyway, if anyone could give me any amount of information (and/ or personal experiances) it would be very very helpful for me. I really would very much like to go to college in St. Petersburg most especially, thus why I am posting in this forum....but I would look elsewhere too for university, it depends on what they offer.
One more thing. I am open to an exchange student type program. (although it is hard to find a college in the US that offers a russian exchange - and I have not anywhere seen one for more than one semester....) But really more so, I am really looking to graduate from a russian university if it can be done? To finish out my last two years of education there....Since I am in community college right now. Next summer I will have to choose a transfer...I want to see if it can be here...instead of where I'm from. Can this be done or is it just a silly dream?

I have learned russian here and there on my own (Rosetta Stone and Pinsleur programs) but it is sorely lacking. Of course I have alot of time between now and next summer....to pick it up and study it an intensly as I can once again and more seriously now that I have decided on this "crazy plan" :-p
(I had studied it previously just for fun really and mainly to see if I could one day understand what commentatory would talk about on some gymnastic videos I owned/ tape traded for.....mainly I studied it becuase I was bored at the time. Smile And it was something to do. But if I can use it for more then to please myself and a hobby- then I plan to study very intensly now.... Embarassed )

There are college classes for it here in the US ( they are a few hours away and another in another state...) for it but those classes at college and others I have looked at aren't intense enough at all for fluency....unless it is years and years from when you start. This might be barrier to actually studying a secondary education at a Russian university. (lol) So I ask for advice on this as well. But that is less a concern for me than the main question on wheather it is actually very possible as foreigner to transfer and what the requirements might be. I can probaly take care of the language mastery myself....
I really hope this idea is something that could be possible to me. I know I could learn alot in Russia and I think it would be a wonderful thing to go to school there. No reason not to do it- if one sees an oppertunity or possiblity somewhere and the interest and desire is there- no reason not take it if it exists, I think.

Anyway any help and info on any of this is most welcomed! Thank you in advance, and this is great site here, very interesting and helpful. Smile

Thanks Alice for answering my post. Smile
I think i may have wrote it too indepth to my situation, instead of just a general question....:-p Oh well.
Do you have any suggestions for what is known by people to be the best schools? It would be useful to know. I don't want to go to one that isn't considered to be so good. Thanks.

Ah gymnastics. You know how to get my attention. Wink

I tried to think of things that would help you, but the first thing that stood out was that you were wanting to graduate from a Russian university. I can't tell you about tranfsering to do that, but I was curious as to your level with the language. Not to discourage, but I am not sure "here and there" or the time period of now and next summer will be enough time to earn enough of a grasp on the language to withstand being taught in Russian-lectures, completing essays, etc. You wouldn't want to set yourself up to fail. St. Petersburg SU offers programmes in English. Here They are Masters though. You can also try emailing them for more specific answers. The University's main page is here: http://www.spbu.ru

As you said yourself, language in the end may prevent you from graduating from there now, but who is to say it will in the future? So don't be discouraged! Maybe you want to consider studying at a Russian university to gain the language instead of a degree. It is easier to achieve fluency if you are actually in the country because you are forced to use it. At your college now, even if you learn the language and use it in class, the minute you exit that room you will be using English. However, if you are in Russia, you will be immersed and unlike in America, your daily life would be filled with Russian. And look here, the same university has an intensive language programme: Centre of Russian Language and Culture

Or maybe you don't have the desire to learn the language at a high level but just wish to study there. There are programmes that work with college students to send them abroad. Here are a few: CIEE, Lexia International, and AIFS. I am sure there are many more out there, you just have to find them.

As for money: scholarships. Free money is floating around out there up for grabs, just need to find it.

You said a lot and I am sure I have forgotten things I had wanted to tell you, but I hope I helped a little.
