So true vitals...Yes Spice Vitals is right...your tune has changed...are you getting home sick? The American way is not to live in cities...see home ownership is what we Americans strive for. And you don't really own the home if you don't own the ground it is on. Americans like space and privacy...it used to be here that if you weren't a land owner you couldn't vote...perhaps it would be best if it was still this way. These suburban sprawls increased the over all quality of life in the US something which the rest of the world is so very envious of. Geez now that the Russians can actually have cars they sure do like them!

I am not getting home sick. I feel right at home here in New York city where people - just like in Europe - mostly live in apartments in the city. They just walk a few blocks when they want to grab a bite or need to do grocery shopping. They use public transportation (subway, bus) when they need to get to work. That's how most Europeans live - be that London or Paris. That's how many Canadians live in cities like Montreal, Vacouver and Toronto. I hate suburban sprawl. Quality of life is a relative term. I don't find this kind of isolated living where people drive everywhere, hardly walk on the street and go to shopping mall to socialize. I find that makes most of America very boring to me. I don't know who you mean when you talk about envy. People in poorer countries envy America's economic opportunities and wealth. It does not mean they envy that suburban lifestyle. I find that we are now paying for this with increased dependency on oil and lack of social contact where in so many towns and communities kids have nothing to do but do drugs and have sex - simply because they live in the "Suburbia USA" where at 9pm everyones go to sleep and there's nothing going on the streets.

To each thier own...people like different things and that's ok.

Why has there been some saying for the longest time that New York is one of the places where its possible to NEVER meet your neighbors. How is it that you think that drugs and sex are less prevalent in big cities? If anything its more concentrated. I feel sorry for you, its probably best that you stay inside your tiny apartment and close the curtains. Laughing

Drugs are prevalent not in big cities, but in bad areas of big cities where the poorest Americans and immigrants live (housing projects, etc). In Manhattan where most people live in small apartments, the crime is extremely low. Crime is significant in Detroit where many bad neighborhoods are actually very suburban with small separate houses. That's what happened in the 60 and 70s when many well-to-do whites moved out of the cities into the suburbs to escape high crime. I was talking about something completely different. Take a typical american city - say Cincinnati, Ohio. It's called a city, but in reality, it's just a small downtown with private homes surrounding it. It's really a big suburb. Even a small European city has more live to it than a large American city like Cincinnati where you can hardly find anyone in the center after 8-9pm.

I live 2 hours from Cincinnati, Ohio and I beg to differ. That city never sleeps. I would bet my entire paycheck on it.

We mean diffent things when we talk about the city and what city is. Go to any European city of the city of Cincinnati (say, Vienna or Munich) and will see what I mean. What you call "life" is no life at all. Very few people live in Cincinnati (the city itself). Even when you see nightlife, most of these ppl drive from the suburbs and leave after they are done dancing and drinking. And public transportation is virtually non-existent in cities like Cincinnati.

Visit Europe (or even Canada - cities like Vancouver) and will you will understand what I mean.
