If you want to spend some time out of a big city, then Russian Karelia is probably a good option. Take an overnight train from Moscow or St.Petersburg and you are there. Activities like snowmobile riding, cross-country skiing, rafting, hiking are affordable. Opportunities for fishing (including salmon and trout) and hunting are from good to excellent.
It can also be attractive to spend several days in a countryside cottage with a Russian steambath or Finnish sauna, drinking beer and visiting numerous cultural sights of the area.
