Yep, already have an Epipen. As morbid as it sounds, it's not as useful as some may think. All it really does is slow down the reaction, basically slowing your "death" if it's that serious so you have time to make it to the hospital. Are severe food allergies common at all in Russia? Friend of mine told me I should find out to make sure the hospital staff would know how to handle the situation in an emergency.
And it's good peanut butter isn't present. How about other nuts? Like walnuts, chesnuts, hazelnuts, etc? I don't care about cakes and cookies because I always avoid them. But for a "supper" type meal, do a lot of meals contain these? Maybe mixed into sauces? And if so, would they be mainly found at fancy restaraunts? I'm not too concerned about fancy Russian cooking. I'd more like to feel safe going for chicken, fries and a beer or something sort of Russian without worrying about nut contact in the kitchen.
Thanks for all the help so far. |

Hello Eyespy, Ignore the ADHD answers above and pay attention to the legit ones. I have seen an anaphylactoid reaction to nuts and it IS SERIOUS. If you are so severely allergic to nuts, you surely have a epi-pen. If you are going to Russia (or any other foreign country), you should definitely take more than one. If you have to use it, you might not be able to easily get a replacement. If you take a written prescription for it from your physician, it should satisfy customs. Just be sure your physician notates that you are to carry them on your person and that you are to have x number of them. Don't let anyone tell you that they must be with checked baggage. You need to have at least one with you at all times. Also, it would be a good idea to take some Benadryl (diphenhydramine) 25mg tablets. If you have a mild reaction, take 1-2 (25-50mg) immediately. If you don't have a reaction, you can also take 1 tablet to help you sleep on the plane.
Inform your doc about your trip and ask if he or she has any other suggestions as well. I wish you the best of luck on your trip and, with some preparation, you should be able to relax and enjoy Russia. If you have other questions, please PM me and I'll be glad to talk further. DennisF |

Mark do you know what chinnuts are?
Chinnuts are a dimple in a chin like Kirk Douglas has.
So Uday was not as rude as you think. |

Thanks Dennis, I think I just overreacted at first. I should be alright. I am just trying to get as much information as possible. I'm more aware of the cooking places like Germany than in Russia so I want to have as much information as possible. All of your suggestions are helpful and I definately will get more than one before I go. I emailed the embassy and the university so see what they could tell me but neither have emailed me back yet. Hopefully they will give me more info. But, this is quite a ways away. So I'm probably looking into this too early
Thanks guys |

| Hey Eyespy, that epipen doesn't slow your death, it saves your life until you can get definitive treatment at nearby hospital! It is not meant to be complete treatment and in no way replaces the need for a hospital. Another strategy to minimize the severity of a reaction is to keep an antihistamine level in your body. You can take benadryl 25mg every six hours and, if you are exposed to a reaction causing substance, it will somewhat lessen the reaction. Again, this does NOT replace the epi=pen or the need for a trip to the local ER if you have any symptoms of difficulty breathing or wheezing. DennisF |

| Well, sorry if I worded it wrong but that's what I meant. Last time I was told my level of reaction would be pretty high and if untreated probably result in death. Without an epipen some people can die in 5-10 minutes or less. All I meant is with allergy medicine + the epipen it holds off the reaction so you can make it to the hospital. But, if you were to only use the epipen and do nothing afterward your chances of being fine are slim. That;s what I meant, sorry it was worded wrong. But even though, assuming the doctors would react to the problem accordingly, I would probably survive a reaction it's still not fun to have one. I haven't had one since I was young, like 7 or so...over 10 years. I just want to know as much as I can to minimize the risk because every reaction has the potential to make the next reaction even more serious. |

Well, I got a PM with a joke which is the only place I have heard that expression used.
Besides what would dimples have in common with an allergy to nuts? Nothing really.
I would take extra medicine if your doctor would allow it. A friend of mine whose mom is sick said she had to pay alot for medicine just to treat a cold, so I could imagine the price for any type of presciption drug.
I would plan one epipen for every day you are planning to be there and doubble the regular meds.

It comes across as a perverted sexual joke, one which I didn't like the first time I heard it, nor was I impressed when you PM'd the so-called joke.
Jokes don't have to be of a sexual nature. And I am not a boor if I do not wish to read them. I am not now, nor have I ever been a twat. I just think the jokes should not need a sexual connantation which can be associated with them.
If you want to make sexual jokes then find the appropriate forum.
