I wanted to ask one of the French speakers how to say "cabbage head". This particular teacher used to call the girls this...it seems to be an endearing term, as funny as it sounds. Is that correct?

I haven't heard that one for over 25 years. Back east, I used to hear " Mon petit chou" which means " my little cabbage " That's something the french women used to say all the time. Smile

Ah, that's it! Thank you very much. I must have made up the cabbage head part, lol. He would say exactly "mon petit chou", ha, that's great Smile

Yes, I noticed the same thing. And that, of course, is the major problem.

While it's fine to say whatever you want in the talk lounge threads, the rubbish more often than not, spills over into other threads and it is this that is detrimental to the objectives of the forum.

I realise that moderating can be a thankless and time consuming job however if someone has taken it on they should be prepared to put a bit of effort into it.

The problem is these people spend so much time here that you would need a team of 20 moderators to keep up with it all. Anyway, site admin is aware of the problem. But it's high season right now and things are busy, so it might be a while before anything is done about it.

There's not much I can add to this thread than has already been said - by the site admins and by the more vocal participants... but, well, I'll try...

Somebody said there was no way to know whether the diatribes here were chasing people off - I'm here to say that they will, and they do. I wasn't aware of this thread and was conversing with Greg on another subject and I mentioned to him that I thought that threads were spilling out of Talk Lounge and were impacting other areas of the site. It's quite the turn-off from my perspective. WTR is very much a different place today than it was 3-4 years ago.

IMHO, a user with over a thousand posts in a just a year is a wonderful thing if they are contributing knowledgeable insight relative to their travels in Russia. It is much less meaningful if one hasn't been to Russia... While I really don't care if somebody who has a lot of time on his hands decides to post 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 posts a week in Talk Lounge, it does have a bit of a spillover effect on the rest of the board. Suppose one of the folks that have such a high post count posts outside of Talk Lounge under a "help" post that a newbie posts. Perhaps that frequent poster will post an amazingly helpful post with all the right details... it's only natural to click on the name and see some of the posts that user has made elsewhere in the community… that little click will bring a new user right over to the Talk Lounge where he will generally find a bunch of garbage. If the Talk Lounge was one of my first impressions of Way To Russia, I (as a new user) would probably not be back.

Moderating a board is tough - you have to decide what to keep, what to delete, and you have to find time to moderate. Unlike some of the users who apparently have lots of free time on their hands, the mods probably have real jobs and interests outside of WTR.

WTR has been immensely helpful to me in the past - and I'm quite sure to thousands of other travelers who have visited Russia. It seems, again, imho, that Talk Lounge has evolved into a social club of sorts. I don't come here to read about US politics, or to watch a long-distance dating scene, or to enter into petty little quibbles between people who will most likely never visit Russia. My view is that the off topic Talk Lounge has outlived its usefulness and that particular section of the board should be closed.

Well Dan Brew here you are reading this thread...which you chose to do so. I've posted a lot of comments and some and actually quite a few are very relevant to traveling to Russia. Talk lounge is as the name implies...a lounge. So it's a place for people to socialize and as we can see there is a few of us who do socialize regularly...albeit some of the comments are in fact negative and a sort of battle of the wits. But good does come out of this too. Friendships are made and even romance can occur as it has at least for a couple of the members. So there is a lot that goes on behind close doors. So if you find that the talk lounge has out lived it's usefulness...you are so very wrong! Perhaps maybe it's just that you should be more selective in your choice of threads. And if perhaps you read into them a little more you would see that many of us post very useful information and ask good questions regarding travels to and from Russia. You see you are so very wrong in your wanting regulate what happens here...pretty selfish of you if you ask me...to descriminate and to regulate freedom of speech. Bottom line is...you and everyone else here has the right to free choice...choice to read what we want to. Stop being lazy and put the required effort into weeding out what you determine to be good or not. Was on the forum the other day and the people on WTR numbered well over a hundred...proving that the threads are not tuning people away. I'm sure if we look at a slow day...a day when the regulars are not here...I'm sure those numbers go down too. Point is we don't have much of a impact on who comes and who stays...you are still right? Why yes you are...WTR must be important to you.

I have never in my life seen a few people on this forum gripe over others who are just socializing and making conversation. Ridiculous!

Hey, I hope you all are going to make up and still be friends now?
Shame if things really got serious.

I can only be your friend if you answer 2 of my questions.

1. Are you Yuri's Girl in a lesbian sense as was suggested, you can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_%28animation%29

2. Where and how you met Yuri?

Ah, ok. I guess I missed it. Sorry, Yuri's Girl.

Still can't type her name without feeling awkward. It must be some kind of puppy love.

I can't imagine saying about me: Tanya's Markus... Just doesn't sound right. I am Markus' Markus.

Did you have a shot of bourbon whisky or something? Coz you begin to sound like that freaking-scary woman from Canada once did. I am glad she shut up about it.

Nikir, I completely agree. But what do you think should be done? Banning seems heavy-handed to me...

I would say, if the post is "irrelevant" (don't take me wrong, I am guilty of that too, a lot of times, though I try to control myself and behave, usually), BUT if the post is indeed "irrelevant" for a valid reason, be it my post or anybody's it SHOULD be deleted. I mean, just delete the post, and make a record, and when a user gets too many deleted posts on his/her record, there can be the option of a TEMPORARY ban from the site (like for a week or a month). Then in case of a repeated "offence", you should ban the user permanently.

Also, yes, there is way too many pro-American propaganda stuff going on in here.
