I WOULD LIKE TO TRAVEL FROM TALLINN TO ST.PETERSBURG AND THEN MOSCOW FROM JANUARY 9TH TO RETURN TO TALLINN ON THE 22ND JANUARY 2005. APPROXIMATELY HOW MUCH WOULD THIS JOURNEY COST BY TRAIN? CAN I BUY TRAIN TICKETS AT THE STATION IN TALLINN?

DO I NEED TO BOOK TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION BEFORE I CAN OBTAIN A VISA, OR CAN I BUY THE VISA THEN BOOK MY TICKETS AND ACCOMMODATION UPON ARRIVAL?

THANKYOU, LUKE[/u][/b]

You need a visa to enter russia. To obtain a tourist visa, you must have every night booked before you enter russia. You also need to be registered. You must register with an "accredited" hotel with 72 hours of arrival.
Check the russian embassy page.

Nicmac. I do not know who told you this but it is not entirely correct.

Firstly, you do not need to have every night booked. You can arrive after the date on your tourist visa and leave beforehand. So long as the time you are there is covered by the tourist visa and you dont arrive too early to the arrival time or leave too late to the departure time on your visa you are fine.

Secondly, you do not need to register with an "accredited hotel". That is total rubbish and has probably been spoon fed to you by a hotel to acquire your business. The fact is you can register with ANY accredited company. It does not need to be a hotel. It can be a travel agency, an apartment rental agency or a marriage agency. When I was last over there I rented an apartment off a friend. She was not an accredited company, just a single mum trying to make ends meet, but I needed to register my visa. What I did is went to the nearest marriage agency, paid a $30 fee for them to register it and that was that, I was registered. You are right regarding the 72 hour rule however. Register it the day you get there or if it is the weekend, the monday.

I think the Eurolines busses are a better bet, without trying I think russian trains suck. Unless you are a train freak of course Wink

Also often no english is spoken by railway officials, maybe this is better on international routes??

Tell me how this turns out, it would be interesting to know if there are any special problems entering/exiting via Narva/Ivangorod than via Finland or a big international airport??

Don't rely to heavy on timetables and remember that a jouney in eastern europe is to be perceived as a prolonged party!! Look on a five hour delay as getting more for your money Wink
