I’m traveling to St Petersburg from Australia this July, and I want to use my hair straightener there. From what I can gather, the power points in Russia are double round pin plugs, but I’m not sure whether they are normally grounded. The trouble is that my straightener is a 3 pronged (grounded) appliance.
So I have two questions: firstly how common is it for Russian power points to be grounded, and secondly, is it possible to buy a converter/adaptor that will allow a grounded appliance to be used in a non grounded power point? |

The power points are grounded, the earth pin is in the wall socket rather than in the plug.
Get your adaptor in Australia, you won't find one in Russia. I take a 4 outlet powerboard with an overload cut out as well. That way you can charge your cameras, phone and MP3 player all at once. |

Ok, thanks.
I have a new question now, in Australia our power is 240V and 50Hz (whereas in Russia it's 220V and 50Hz). From what I understand, I don't need a transformer (/converter), just an adaptor to fit the European style plug.
However, when I asked some people in a store over here, they said things like my 1600W appliances (eg hair drier) wouldn't work over there - to make it work they say I need a transformer.
I'm a bit sceptical, does anyone know anything about this? |

| I haven't taken a hair dryer over there but have seen them in use and they appear to be exactly the same as the ones we have here. So I suspect your information may be wrong. |

| You can always buy a hair dryer in Russia. They can go for as cheap as 200 Rubles ($10). |

| It's mainly my phone charger, battery charger, hair drier and hair straightener I want to use in Russia - in particularly my straightener is pretty expensive, and so I'd prefer to buy a converter to use it over that (if I need one, that is). |

Look you really won't have a problem, all their appliances are the same as the ones we use. Only the plugs are the European type so you will need an adaptor which you can buy at any Big W, Kmart, Bunnings etc. Take a powerboard as well and plug the adaptor into the power point and the board into the adaptor. Then you can charge multiple gadgets simultaneously.
If hair dryers are so cheap there I would get one rather than lugging it all the way from Aus. The airlines are all pretty strict with weight now. |

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you - I doubt commonly used appliances over here wouldn't work there. Thanks for your help |
