I want to study in Ukraine for the summer. I really want to learn to speak Russian. I can't afford the exchange programs my uni offers (dear god they're expensive). I've noticed several programs from Ukraine and Russia that seem to be run by universities over there. The general notion is that for ~300 dollars a month, you get food and shelter and daily lessons in the language. I don't need anything really nice, just a place to sleep at night so it sounds like a good deal. Anyone had experience with these programs before?

Thanks!

Personally I'd be a little weary about the Ukraines right now, but maybe
this is just a peaceful delayed revolution!!! Also remember that the Ukranians speak Ukranian as their first language, not russian!

Just curious, how much are the exchange programs in your country? I just found some in my country that offers st Petersburg for ~$550 a month (inclusive lodging and teaching but excluding food).

Since it does not seem to important for you to actually be in Russia, I might suggest Latvia, no Visa for US-residents (at least not for the first three month I think).

I saw some add on private language lessons in russian ~$378/month and since there are about 1/2 million native russian speakers in Latvia you can get lots of practice, even though it is not an official language. Add to that food and lodging, student dorm, maybe $100 a month.

Food, I lived like a king on $10 a day, but you can go way below that with your own grocery shopping, (russian is widely spoken in the markets)

Go for the 400/month programs - www.cie.ru is pretty good - I went there for a month. It is run by Moscow State University. The best University in Russia, MGIMO (Moscow State Foreign Service Academy) has a one year language program for five thousand dollars.
