I can recommend one of the best books I've read in the past few years. It's called "The Magus" by John Fowles

Russians do read a lot! Well, most of them. Are you interested in Russian literature?

My boyfriend is constantly reading, newspapers, magazines, books, online Russian newsletters, he's always reading. He prefers non-fiction and makes fun of me reading my "silly fiction" books. I'm not a romance novel reader but I do like my fiction!

Really good question and the book selections sound good, thanks all!

Well, I think Russian's do. All the people I visited had classics on their shelves. Byron, Keats, Poe etc etc. My wife also collected the entire works of Boris Akunin (pseudonym for an impossibly long Georgian name), and lo and behold, at least 5 have been translated into English. They are a good read if you are into period detective novels. We went and saw one that had been made into a film, can't remember the name...

Yes I noticed they like to read...actually at the Russian group I belong to we had a night where everyone was reading russian literature...I think literature is a huge part of Russian Culture...all of the arts are for sure. I'd like to spend a month in Russia just seeing all the museums in the day and the theater at night and the clubs at late night

It seems pretty common they like to read. If you're looking for a good one in English, I'd suggest The Collected Tales of Nikolai Gogol, translated by Pevear & Volokhonsky. Reminds me very much of late Mark Twain--great sense of humor, but often with a bit of a dark (or at least realistic) edge. And they're short stories, so easy to read. I think the book is currently out of print, but still can be had through Amazon.

I think I read a few of those stories. I believe one was called something like "The Diary of a Madman"...it was certainly a little bizarre.

"Dead souls" by Gogol is a must read.

Did you know that Gogol was paranoid about being buried alive? Apparently, when Gogol's coffin was exhumed, his body was flipped over.
