Hi there,
I just arrived in Moscow and stay here till next year. I was wondering if there is a web-site or organization etc. that helps new international students to get to know other international people or Russian students in Moscow.

Why not meet people on the street in person? There lots of young people hanging out. The whole point of being in Russia is so that one does not have to meet people on the internet or through special clubs, but the normal old fashioned way. Rolling Eyes

I don't have a problem with that, but the problem is that somehow, most russian people don't speak English or in my case German. My Russian sucks. Once I ask them if they speak English they become even quiter.
That's what I experienced.

What do you do there in Moscow? Are you studying at the university? I would suggest finding some students who are studying your language that way you can help them learn. Is your native language English? I heard something about a club in Moscow where they go to practice English and they need native speakers of English to join the club. I think it's called the Moscow English club. You might want to do an internet search for that. Also, check out the bars where foreign students are more likely to go, that way you will see people who speak English. When did you get there? It is a little rough at first to get used to Russia, but after a while things should improve. I found that when I was there people wanted to talk with me just because I was from another country and they were interested in that.

I'm an Intern for an Airline, which belongs to my studies in Germany. My native language is German but I'm fluent in English as well. Looking for this Moscow English Club is a good idea. I will do that. Thank you!
Which country are you from and are you still in Moscow? I heard about these bars but didn't have the chance yet to go there.
Thanks a lot. Joana

Hey All,
I'm going to be in Moscow 24-25 Dec, I'd like to hook up with someone to show me the sights, or if anyone's got any ideas on accomodation or things to see off the tourist trail they would be much appreciated.
Hope to see some of you soon.

Hi Fox01 joana and russianboy, if you're free to meet up with a new traveller, please send me an email! Here's a copy of the message i posted on the forum:

"Hi Fellow travellers! Is anyone's going to be in Moscow between December 26 2004 and January 3 2005? I'm looking for someone to join me in exploring the place, especially its nightlife, young-ish scene, or any off-the-beaten-track bits and pieces where tourists might not go. I'm a friendly twenty-something Filipino from Sydney travelling to Russia with two parents, an uncle and an aunt. I'm pretty sure i'll be unable to drag them anywhere that's not listed in "Where" magazine or get them to go out after dinnertime! If there are any adventurous travellers out there who are willing to team up with me for an urban safari or two, please drop me a note! Se habla Castellano tambien

I thought the older Russias would dislike us Americans. Also my Russian is not the best it would be nice to meet up with some Americans visiting Russia.

Oh believe me i will be enjoying my time in Russia. But after a while from all the Russian speaking i will need to speak to some Americans. For New Years i will be going to my g/f DACHA. Im not sure what a Dacha is and she said there are no showers there. And it will be very-very cold. What is a Dacha? Is it like a trailor?? I have no idea? Can someone explain. I know i will see in 3 days what it is.

You're a luck man, SWP. I'd love to spend my reveillon in a russian dacha. It's a lovely place, like a small farm, where you can have a nice samovar tea party, meeting people, listen to the music, and have a good view of russian country side. I've been once in the summer. I suppose in the winter time it should be much more interesting, with snow. Have a good time and Happy (Russian) New Year.
