|
|
St Petersburg and the surrounding region:
I've obviously done my own research, but would like to know learned opinions of all interesting sites to see, tours to take, and other aspects to experience in the city and countryside (even several hundred kilometres out of the city). Also, don't hesitate including the more obscure attractions.
So, would you be so kind to provide details? Much appreciated. Thanks |

I think he must mean Petergof. Make that a must see place, the sheer grandeur of it is just spectacular. I would suggest that you go by hydrofoil and come back by train, so you can go for a stroll through the town as well.
Some more palace type things you may enjoy are Pushkin (highly recommended) again go for a stroll around the town. You can get there by metro to Moskovskaya and then a bus. While on your way to the bus check out the memorial to the 900 day siege, it's built on the last line of defense of Leningrad and hopefully will be open on the day you go, but even if not still worth a look. Pavlovsk and Oranienbaum are also worth a visit but be prepared to put most of the day into each of these.
Then you can have a look at St Peter and Pauls fortress and try to be there at midday when they fire the gun, believe me the earth moves. While there go to the zoo, it's interesting but rather hard to take. The animals are not treated kindly.
Other things are the Cruiser Avrora which is a museum to the Revolution, a walk in the Summer and Mikailovsy Gardens, lots of museums and of course a ballet at the Marinsky theatre.
I've purposely left the Hermitage till last and you should too because you get so caught up in there that you keep going back and find that your time has run short to do other things.
Those are some of my favourite spots, there are lots of others of course but it's very easy to overdo it in St P and see everything but see nothing.
Perhaps someone like Spice who is a native can come up with some better suggestions for you. |

In Pushkin you will see Catherine's Palace and also a park where you can take a walk, rather nice. But if you go to Pavlovsk, you will find a more interesting park there. With old buildings and statues all over it. All these things hide themselves around park, so you have to walk and explore to find them. And still you might leave some behind. Better devote whole day to it.
Across the canal, in front of Peter and PAul fortress there is a museum of artillery, you will see military cannons and some other stuff in the street.
Worth visiting are also Kunstkamera museum and Wild Life museum next to it (don't remember exact name), which are not far from Hermitage - across Palace bridge(next to rostral columns). |

Yes, its all good advice. Thanks guys.
Google Earth is great. But, I remember it had some problems in seeing parts of St Petersburg. Meaning, the imagery wasn't available! Quite a problem for some large provincial cities too. Started a thread on it a while back. |

I love this earth google. I could zoom in on businesses, airports and lots of places in St. Petersburg. This is a neat tool to use if you want to know about a place, it will give you the information on it. There is the live earth google too, but you have to pay for that one. I thought about doing the live one too. |

Surfguy,
In another thread, what $500/day tours are you talking about in St Petes? Please detail these for me. |
